HOUSTON —

Conservative furor over what is taught in public schools reached a fever pitch in Texas on Wednesday, as Republican Gov. Greg Abbott announced a criminal inquiry into what he called “pornography” in school libraries, his third directive on the matter this month.

“The fact that pornographic material that serves no educational purpose has been made available to students in Texas public schools is a clear violation of the law,” Abbott wrote in a Wednesday letter, directing the Texas Education Agency to “investigate any criminal activity in our public schools involving the availability of pornography” to minors and to refer cases for prosecution.

“We have a responsibility to ensure that no Texas child is exposed to pornography or obscene content while in a Texas public school,” he wrote.

"Beloved" by Toni Morrison.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beloved_(novel)

"Beloved has been banned from five U.S. schools. Common reasons for censorship include bestiality, infanticide, sex, and violence.

In 2007, twenty years after its 1987 publication, the novel was abruptly abandoned by an AP English class at Eastern High School in Louisville, Kentucky, at the order of the school's principal. The class had nearly reached the end of the book when a parent complained about language on page 13."

What they really object to is the accurate depiction of Slavery and the guilt of the white people that perpetrated the system.

Interesting link on the Banned Book project. https://bannedbooks.library.cmu.edu/beloved-by-toni-morrison/

As a middle and high school English teacher, I told my students the most subversive thing they could do was read banned books. Beloved is no more or less violent than the bible, or Beowulf.

remember the lyrics to the song Another Brick In The Wall very well.

We don't need no education
We dont need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone

Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!

Pink Floyd 1980 live performance:

The thing is, ever since Texas was established the political and religious leaders
have fought to maintain their power so this latest uproar is nothing new but it's way
past time that the rest of us put an end to it.

Do they have a manufactured list of of the porn...conveniently matching books that would offend a conservative christian?

This an attempt to impose a religion on the libraries and censorship.

They can get plenty of it on their phones and ipads. This is just more performative bullshit to stir up the parents. Who probably look at porn on their computers too.

And the local boards make the academic decisions. So, he's gonna sue school boards? School superintendents? School librarians?

Does this guy want half the state behind bars, or is it my imagination?

My wife and I, because we are not saints, abandoned that profession before students had cell phones.

Okay, it's just me who is not the saint. My wife decided to further her education so she could practice medicine in undeserved communities.

Unlike her, I've never had to tell anyone face-to-face they have Gonorrhea and ask them where they might have acquired it.
