4.4 Million Americans Quit Their Job Last Month

“A record 4.4 million Americans quit their jobs in September, as job openings remained near record levels according to federal data, a sign of how imbalances in the labor market continue to complicate the economic recovery 20 months into the pandemic,” the Washington Post reports.

“Those numbers are up from August, when 4.3 million people who quit their jobs in August — about 2.9 percent of the workforce.”

I think I understand some of the reasons people are quitting. But how are these people supporting themselves? Are they 2-income families? Do the tighten their proverbial belts? Are they young people living at home? Are they working so-called side hustles and trying to turn them into full time self employment?

I get the “take this job and shove it” attitude, especially post pandemic. But they still gotta eat.

he says they do "The Gig Economy" jobs. Such as Favor, etc? I don't know anything about that but it doesn't seem sustainable to me. But I'm old - what do I know.

Labor participation rate is not dropping, so this is employees seeking out better opportunities.

My current employer is normally spectacularly cheap with money (for the past year they've been promoting unqualified people internally to avoid paying market wages for outside hires), gave us a shock announcement of a 50% increase in our year end bonuses. I also quietly received a sizeable 'thank you' bonus that I know was really a retention bonus.
