Modern small planes are pretty sophisticated and as long as they're well maintained they are pretty reliable. The big thing is don't fly them in stupidly bad weather. Yeah you can take off in a 747 into a thunderstorm but don't try that in a Cessna. And small plane pilots tend not to have the experience of commercial pilots, so they make mistakes like John Denver not knowing where the fuel switch was in the plane he'd just bought. But the technology is sound. It's just that the owners of small planes are more likely to take shortcuts and risks that commercial carriers know better than to take.
