A 25-Year Old Texas Man Violently Beat a Black Cyclist Unconscious in His Neighborhood

Elliot Reed, 50, was out on his daily morning bike ride in his Seabrook, Texas, neighborhood on October 29 when 25-year-old Collin Joseph Fries pulled his vehicle up alongside him at a stop sign and began harassing him.

“You need to get out of this neighborhood because you’re making a lot of people nervous,” Fries, a white man, told Reed, a Black man, as reported by ABC13.

According to the police incident report obtained by Bicycling, the assault happened near the 100 block of Hampton Springs Drive and Lakeside Drive. Both Reed and Fries live nearby.

In an interview with ABC13, Reed said he crossed the median of the road to try to distance himself from Fries, but Fries followed him and continued harassing him. “You don’t live here, and if I catch you, I’m gonna do something to you,” Fries threatened, according to Reed.

10. Reminds me of a story

Read this in a book once. A young gay man tried to pick up an Army Ranger at a bar in 1970s Savannah. Ranger gets two of his friends and they beat in his face and skull to within an inch of his life (can't remember if he died). But he was completely disfigured.

Typically, they used the gay panic defense and got off with misdemeanor battery.

When a local newspaper interviewed the admitting nurse who was at the ER the night of the incident, she replied, "If that is a misdemeanor, may I never live to see a felony."

14. I haven't been able to find anything about Fries, i.e. did he actually own a home

in the neighborhood, or rent, or live with his parents? I say this because it seems to be a reasonably upscale neighborhood compared to most (confession, I live in SoCal so I could be way off), so one aged 25 would in most cases need a higher than average income to qualify to buy. And if that is the case, I can't imagine his employer (if he had one) not firing him on the spot (Texas is an at-will state when it comes to employment).

This is the immediate neighborhood, which Zillow shows property valuations in the $350,000-400,000 range.

The owner of the house is Jill E. Fries, with no other party listed as owner, and appears to be in her 50's. So my guess is that little Collin lives with his mommy. What a surprise!

I'd find some kind of route that was a loop that would give me the distance I wanted to run, and had a place for me park my car. The street couldn't be too narrow, or it had to have a sidewalk.

Never ONCE did I consider that I wasn't jogging in my own neighborhood. It didn't occur to me that anyone would mind. And no one ever did.

People say there's no such thing as white privilege. There most certainly is.
