I think I Spotted Antifa

"Doughnut"

Wearing a military beret and a Polish wartime resistance armband, 94-year-old Wanda Traczyk-Stawska stunned the crowd at a pro-EU rally when she thundered "Be quiet, stupid boy! You lousy bastard" at a member of a far-right group attempting to disrupt the gathering over a loudspeaker.

...................

Traczyk-Stawska was a 12-year-old girl guide when the German army invaded Poland. She joined the resistance movement and went on to carry out acts of sabotage under the sweet pseudonym of "Doughnut".

At the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising on August 1, 1944, she was one of 50,000 fighters to revolt against the Nazis -- as well as a rare girl with a machine gun, an assignment usually reserved for men at the time.

This woman inspires me.

Another example of the lie behind the terms "balls" for courage and the denigrating "pussy" for cowardice.

a region of West Prussia that today is Poland. Her grandfather fled to the US as a political refugee from Kaiser Bill for having supported the parliamentarian reform plans of Kaiser Bill's father.

My mother's brother served in the US Army in Europe during WWII, was captured by Nazis and spent 2 years as a POW.

EDIT TO ADD: Liberalism and opposition to fascism are in my blood.

unity and inspiration, not a literal comparison with her. Few people have that kind of personal strength and courage in adversity.

When I was younger and read about Nazi Germany, I used to wonder why people allowed it to happen. Why didn't they band together against Hitler's thugs? The answer is complex, but there were at least pockets of resistance throughout Europe. I wondered what I would have done in the same circumstances.

Little did I realize then that someday that question might not be hypothetical for me.

A lot of what the resistance did fell into two categories - working to get the truth out, and working to save lives (mostly by hiding people because that had become their only option.)

I know I ca keep the secrets of people who are doing or have done something dictated by their conscience but which would get them into deep doo doo if certain other people ever found it out ... because I've done it. More than once. And that is all I will say about that.

What I can possibly to to get the truth out, I am doing. I wish it could be more. At 76, with comorbidities and mobility issues, there are limits.
