Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff believes the criminal contempt charges brought against Steve Bannon will help the House select committee's investigation into the Capitol riot. Indeed, he said Sunday, they started to do so even before the Justice Department's indictment of the former Trump adviser on Friday.
Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press, Schiff said that the DOJ's indictment of Bannon will "without a doubt" compel more subpoenaed witnesses to appear before Congress for deposition.
"Even before the Justice Department acted, it influenced other witnesses who were not going to be Steve Bannon," Schiff explained. "Now that witnesses see that if they don't cooperate, if they don't fulfill their lawful duty when subpoenaed, that they too may be prosecuted, it will have a very strong focusing effect on their decision-making.
"So it's very positive. I view this as an early test of whether democracy was recovering. If our law is to mean anything, it has to be applied equally. And so I'm very glad that Justice Department has moved forward in this fashion."

(21,405 posts)have been saying the same thing for months. The select committee doesn't have the clout of the DOJ. It will be months before Bannon's trial and then appeals and then no guarantee he will testify. Unless the select committee goes the inherent contempt route and locks people up until they testify.
Merrick Garland needs to appoint a special counsel just like Barr did with John Durham, Durham is still trying to dig up dirt.

(3,433 posts)It's failing generally. But I guess we need to act with an optimistic vision for the future?
I'm gonna be feeling very pragmatic until GOP party leaders systematically start enforcing these things against their own side.

(6,401 posts)They knew he would refuse and then they send it to the DOJ.
Bannon can afford the fee and do the little amount of time he gets and could even make more money off of it.
However, the aides, interns, etc. can't do that. So, they sing like canaries, and they may hold the key for prosecution.

(42,770 posts)*thinks* that the Bannon indictment will encourage other people to come forward and be truthful. And I'm not sure if he actually really said that it already helped? What does that mean? The fact that Bannon might have been indicted affected some people?
Just trying to read between the lines here. Hope like hell everyone tells the truth and comes forward.

Voters are watching.
The midterms will be a disaster for us.
Enjoy this holiday season, next year will not be a so merry.
Hope I am wrong.
The last two years of the Biden administration will not be pretty if the Republicans take Congress.
Look for impeachment for both Biden and Harris.
Just lock Trump for something.
