When It Comes To the Baby Boomers, It Is Still All About Me
Millennials have got nothing over the Me Generation, says cultural historian Amy Henderson after touring two new shows on Boomers and the 60s
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/when-comes-baby-boomers-still-all-about-me-180953030/
In neighborhood movie theaters across the nation, silver screens projected celluloid icons that were larger-than-life. The glamour studio, MGM, proclaimed its acting stable included more stars than there are in the heavens. Ego was essential to the star personality, and the studios went to extraordinary lengths to nurture a grand scale of star narcissism. Between 1989 and 1994, I conducted a number of interviews with one of the biggest stars of that era, Katharine Hepburn. I remember how she wagged her finger at me and said: I was a movie star from my first days in Hollywood! She called her 1991 memoir Me.
With the break-up of the studio system after World War II, the self had to find a new starship. The population explosion that began in 1946 and, according to the United States Census, extended until 1964, produced a generation of Baby Boomers who merrily embraced their selfhood. Hollywood cinema had helped to shape the idea of Me, for adolescents of the great depression, who would grow up to became World War IIs Greatest Generation. But it was television that branded the coming-of-age for the Boomers. TV was an immediate communicator, broadcasting events instantly to living rooms across the nation. Boomers learned the transformative power of change from their sofas, and the immediacy of television instilled a lasting sense of personal connection to the techtonic cultural changes that were Blowin in the Wind.
Writing in 1976, journalist Tom Wolfe described Boomers as creating a Me Generation that was rooted in postwar prosperity. Good times created the luxury of the self, and Boomers happily involved themselves with remaking, remodeling, elevating, and polishing ones very self and observing, studying, and doting on it (Me!) Their mantra was, Lets talk about Me! TIME Magazine has chronicled the attention-adoring Boomer Generation from the start, beginning with a February 1948 article that described the postwar population burst as a Baby Boom. Twenty years after the boom began, TIMEs Man of the Year featured the generation 25 and Under. When the Boomers hit 40, TIME wrote about Growing Pains at 40.

(26,019 posts)the ME obsession is as American as apple pie and it preceded Boomers.
The Boomer dates cover more than one generation. There are 18 years between the births of the first and last Boomers. By the time the last ones were born, the first ones were entering college, working, and some were getting married young (especially the women). When the last ones were entering college (1982), the first ones were in their mid 30s with mortgages and pre teen or teenaged children of their own.
Some of the accusations of self-centeredness were based on the causes that Boomers embraced - civil rights, women's rights, opposition to the Vietnam War, support for contraception and abortion.
Young men were "selfish" for resisting an undeclared war that seemed tovhave no purpose. Young women were "selfish" for wanting educations and careers and for postponing child-bearing instead of devoting themselves to a husband, home, and children.
Civil rights activists were "self-centered" or "self-important" for wanting to be heard on issues and to make a difference in their own lives and in society.
But it's true that Boomers were also catered to by parents who had lived through the Depression and WWII and wanted to give their children the prosperity that they had lacked growing up.
Economists, teachers, and psychologists talked about the Boomers among themselves and to the Boomers, too. "You're different. There are so many of you. You have advantages that your parents didn't have." The media and retail saw Boomers as new opportunities for sales growth. Boomers, like any kids, ate up the attention.

(1,939 posts)seem to be here on DU.
Some people disguise their dislike or even hate for SOME well..others...not so much.
(Reading between the lines!)
Not sure how that comment doesn't violate some rule here for denigrating those who are probably Democrats and Boomers. Same goes for blaming Gen X, Millennial's etc.
Next thing is slamming (Gen X, Millenniels) Democrats who don't agree with you because...? Seems a little righteous, but that's just me, I guess.
Maybe Wolfe needs to talk to the people he tries to blame instead of an audience who wants to whole heartedly agree with that concept as the "possible" vitriol comes across.
My Opinion. My Choice.

(559 posts)Just got back from 2 weeks in lovely Mexico City. People and the government there take COVID seriously. There are temperature checks every time you enter a building as well as a squirt of hand sanitizer.
EVERYBODY wears masks even outside, well everybody except some gringos. See a couple of hot blond gringa ladies, no masks for them. Buff young gringo wearing a wife beater, shorts and a hat in a church, he doesn't need a mask he's an American!
And the stupid and arrogance extends beyond the stereotypical white American. I saw an African American family in the airport deliberately ignoring the blocked off every other chair, sitting down right next to an older Mexican man, who pointed out the sign directing them to leave an empty chair between others. They sat anyway, he then got up to move and the American dad unit gave him a totally dickish little finger wave. Note my point is not that an African American family behaved badly but that shitty behavior has become the default action for way too many American no matter their melanin count.
No wonder we have the highest COVID death numbers in the world and no wonder we elected Donald Trump. We are getting what we deserve.

Happy to say that the few politically agitated sorts haven't gained traction, sufficient support clearly lacking (even though both neighborhoods mostly conservative) but probably also sometimes blocked by the moderators.
The only time I've posted on vaccination was to agree with neighbors who felt they had a moral duty to self, family, and society.

(58,785 posts)neighborhood was the lead and basically controlled everything. Some years later there were now teams of reviewers who apparently like, MIRT here, reviewed alerted posts. Except, that the only way become a reviewer was to be chosen by the lead. (!) That could go a long way to explaining why some groups became so toxic and others what they were meant to be.
I don't check either frequently eiether, in part because we're fairly isolated from most "neighbors" and also away from both for long periods. I hope more of our neighbors have become acquainted in real life from them, though. It's a great idea and opportunity for good things.

(12,667 posts)Are they fine staying away from hospitals?
My stepdaughter is an anti-vaxxer and yet regularly vists the hospital with her 3 young girls for illnesses. She likes to do things "naturally". She kind of picks and chooses what science she believes. She believes the germ theory but not the vaccination science created from it. She thinks our bodies now can fight off all germs and viruses on their own.....unlike during the black plague or when dying from cutting your finger was a real thing.
Is it the same with these anti-vaxxers?

After that ban I came back for a while but decided I didn't need the aggravation.
Trumpers are cult members, they don't act using reason or critical thinking. Trying to understand why they do what they do and say what they say using critical thinking doesn't work. They are parrots, zombies, who repeat what they see and hear on Fox and read in our local right wing newspaper. They have been programmed to hate people without knowing those people.

Yeah, I am not going within ten miles of a political discussion or argument on there. Even though my county is 2:1 blue, we have a large swath of rural area (farms and wineries) and a lot of affluent suburban types, so we have our Trump fans. We get arguments about vaccines and school stuff, etc.
Newp. Not going to discuss politics with the people I live around. At best, I'll post and let people know I got their mail. I got a neighbor's laptop delivered once, because it had our house number on the label instead of theirs. I was able to find them and get it to them.
This is where I live, I'd rather not have the acrimony.

However, did you know you can set up groups on Next Door? Our county Democratic Party set up a countywide Democratic group which is great!!! We talk about meetings, events, post media links, etc. The managers will bump off a troll really fast. Of course we rant about things like we do here.
Check with your county party about setting up a group.

(5,457 posts)My daughter is a nurse as I have said before. She is one of the professionals that takes care of them. Before the vaccine, patients for the most part, were grateful for things that were done for them. She says that is no longer the case. The anti-vaxxers argue that the medical staff are lying and there is no such thing as COVID, and it is all a scam to make the hospitals rich. They refuse the medication that is prescribed. They demand instead of ask for things. They are rude. She says some days it is all she can do not to hit them with something.
Of course it is not everyone but a large enough portion that they are hard to deal with.
Sort of like how they treat airline personnel, wait staff in restaurants etc. A strange entitlement that should not be.
