Judge just dismissed the 6th count in the Rittenhouse trial because of a technicality. The statute says minors can't possess a handgun or short barreled rifle. Rittenhouse was carrying a gun with a barrel over 16 inches, so 'technically' it wasn't illegal.

If Kyle was black, his Skittles would be considered a dangerous weapon

The law in Wisconin allows minors to carry a rifle or shotgun while hunting, and the judge determined that the barrel length was sufficient to qualify as a hunting rifle.
Interesting admission that Rittenhouse was hunting, which is decidedly different than self-defense

The gun barrel was legal for hunting which begs the question, what was Kyle Rittenhouse hunting that night in Kenosha when he killed 2 and injured one?

(61,033 posts)he would've been shot that night when he approached the police in their cruisers, visibly armed with an assault weapon after the killings/shooting, he had just committed.
Let's not kid ourselves.

(2,728 posts)How would DU react?

(11,767 posts)No reason for anyone White or Black to go from out of state, to a protest, armed with an AR-15. The skin color only makes a difference to law enforcement and how right wingers react, not to people on DU many of whom dislike firearms and would see openly carrying an AR-15 as an unnecessary provocation.
There has not been a lot of sympathy on DU for the protester who was also armed with a handgun that got shot but not killed.

How do you think DU would react to that hypothetical, never happened, tragedy?

Bipoc teen defends self against three white men including one who was aggressively shouting "kill me N-Word" at the defendant earlier in the evening.
Quite simply, if Rittenhouse was black DU would most likely have less hostility towards him and more inclined to say "lets see how the trial goes."

(38,729 posts)How did DU react to Michael Reinoehl's execution by the US Marshals? Pretty much didn't give a fuck.
He's not black, but he was Antifa.

(13,480 posts)He has a good chance of walking free. In contrast, a judge in Rutherford County, Tennessee, has been locking up children, mostly black, for decades with made up crimes. Very young children have been traumatized by the judges illegal actions and their jail experience where they were put into solitary confinement. In spite of the notoriety, the judge is still in office and is still locking up innocent black children. Republicans seem to think that locking up innocent young black children is okay, but holding an older teenager accountable for murdering people is not okay.
These passages from an NPR story.
Rutherford County, Tennessee, has detained a record number of children, some as young as 7 years old, in past years. Some were arrested for playground fights, others for cursing.
In one 2016 case, four elementary school-age girls were detained for failing to intervene in a fight. A disproportionate number of the children involved and arrested were Black.
Also, the children were interviewed and most suffered after their experiences.
They were scared they were going to get picked up at school and arrested again at any moment. There was another young man we spoke to who was kept four days and denied his medication for bipolar. After he was released, he was put on house arrest, and he tried to commit suicide three times in the coming year.
