8 Dead, Dozens Infected With COVID-19 Due to Outbreak at Connecticut Nursing Home
https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/coronavirus/8-dead-dozens-infected-with-covid-19-due-to-outbreak-at-connecticut-nursing-home/2652161/
Eight people are dead and just shy of 100 more have become infected with COVID-19 after an outbreak at a Connecticut nursing home. The outbreak at the Geer Village Senior Community, a nursing home and rehabilitation center in Canaan, started around the beginning of October when the nursing home was reporting three positive COVID-19 cases. Now, eight residents have died, and 67 residents and 22 staff members caught COVID-19 sometime in the past month and a half. Nursing home officials said 48 residents and 21 staff members have recovered from the virus. Of the 89 total infections, 87 people were fully vaccinated, the nursing home said.

1. Huh?
Residents and staff will become eligible for the booster shot when the community has gone two full weeks without any new COVID-19 cases, they said.

2. not as bad as the headline makes it out to be
"The nursing and rehab center houses only 70 residents and all eight people who died has serious underlying health issues."
So it was elderly people that already had underlying health issues. The vaccine made it so they survived longer than they would have otherwise. I do think it's strange though, from this second quote it seems that some hadn't gotten the booster? Shouldn't the booster have been mandated for everyone there? A person is pretty much unvaccinated at this point without the booster. "Residents and staff will become eligible for the booster shot when the community has gone two full weeks without any new COVID-19 cases, they said. " |

3. Why isn't there more effective treatment at this point?
Yeah, I know nothing about science or medicine, but it seems logical that 2 yrs into the pandemic someone should have developed a more effective treatment.

6. Pfizer results look excellent and they're applying for FDA expedited approval.
Here’s the latest on that. It’s moving quickly since the clinical results were just reported, maybe not even a week ago. https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142827609

4. that is an appaling number
(and percentage) of breakthrough. This needs some serious scrutiny - and I mean under a microscope! Something seriously off kilter.

5. Only 87 of the 89 were vaccinated, those two unvaccinated could've spread it to everyone
... this big is serious

7. Vaccinated individuals can spread the virus too... at same rate as unvaccinated for first several days
of their infection, before their immune system overtakes it. Most congregate care facilities are letting visitors in, and visitors can remove their masks once inside their host’s room.

12. 87 out of 89
would indicate that the vaccine was offering almost nil protection. I haven't seen anything that comes anywhere close to suggesting that type of failure rate.

11. It's probably been 8 or 9 months since they got vaccinated.
The article doesn't say whether or not they'd gotten boosters.
