Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) announced on Wednesday that she is cancer-free.
Good news to share: I got my results back from my first 6-month post-cancer exam & everything was clear. Im so grateful to be healthy and thankful for my family, friends, and the incredible doctors and nurses who have helped me. And dont forget schedule that mammogram today! she tweeted. ....

(1,190 posts)Breast cancer is never considered cured. Not sure what test she would have after 6 months to say cancer free. A petscan might pick up metastasis but that can happen even up to 20 years later. Oh well, politically it sounds good I guess.

The author of the article reworded that to read that she was announcing that she is "cancer free".
So I think this was more of a "it sounds good for a headline" rather than sounds good politically.

(1,190 posts)Cant even imagine what tests she had to say this. Perhaps an ultrasound or MRI after a lumpectomy, but after surgery and clear margins one would not expect for the cancer to return that fast nor is that a typical test at 6 months, but Im just going by my own experiences and knowledge. I imagine if one had a test-happy doctor?

(3,927 posts)After a lumpectomy and radiation treatment, a mammogram at 6 months is typical. If it is clear, then yearly mammograms are usually recommended.
The first mammogram is done after the tissue has healed from the surgery in order to get a baseline image for future comparison. Of course it is examined for signs of the cancer returning, but it is primarily intended for a baseline for the future.

(60,385 posts)My wife had breast cancer 20 years ago. It hasnt returned in that form, but 5 years ago, she was diagnosed with an always-fatal form of cancer known here in Germany as « the murderer. »
However, because she had had cancer already, and gets examined frequently for recurrences, she was that one patient out of ten thousand for whom « the murderer » was discovered early enough to have been stopped before it could spread. Her surgeon was amazed, since this cancer is so silent that it is never discovered until it is too late.
Once you have had cancer, you must get checked for recurrence often. Even then, there are no guarantees, but your chances of surviving a second round are vastly improved.
