(so-called sightings highly concentrated in one or two geographical areas) rather than something real.

Another thing to consider is that these "sightings" have a strong tendency to increase when ever some event publicizes the topic such as the ET movie or War of the Worlds etc.

Too much Star Trek, prime directive, explorers type scifi almost certainly gave people the wrong impression of what the arrival of aliens would actually mean.

Seeing what humans are willing to do to each other cemented my belief that Hawking was right. It won't be good.
