Adam Serwer's essays are always thoughtful and insightful, and he's raised some interesting and important points in this analysis in The Atlantic of the Rittenhouse trial and what it might mean (but shouldn't) politically:
For this reason, the party defends those who engage in rhetoric threatening violence against their political enemies and silences those who denounce it. Whether its Donald Trump justifying his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, Republican members of Congress threatening their colleagues, or Fox News hosts praising Rittenhouse for doing what the government should have done, the desire to kill your political opponents is a sentiment no longer confined to the dark corners of the internet. The principle that canonizes Rittenhouse as a saint for defending his city from rioters, and the mob that stormed the Capitol as martyrs, is the principle that the slaughter of the rights enemies is no crime.
At this point, were living under corporate and medical fascism. This is tyranny, said an attendee at an event held by the conservative group Turning Point USA in October. When do we get to use the guns? The audience responded with applause. How many elections are they going to steal before we kill these people? Most of this is idle bluster from keyboard gangsters on social media. But the more it is encouraged by mainstream political leadership, the less likely it is to remain mere talk.
Rittenhouses trial was a matter of law, and the outcome should not have been dependent on the political questions raised by the events that led to his indictment. But his acquittal will be seen by some on the militant right as a validation of the sentiment that someday, perhaps soon, they will get to kill all these people. No one they would listen to will tell them otherwise.

(5,552 posts)I'm amazed at the misinformation that exists here, everything from it was wrong to throw out the weapon possession charge to he crossed state lines with a weapon and even saying his mother driving him to the protest. People seem to have trouble accepting the truth when it doesn't fit their own narrative.

There are also federal weapons charges even though the judge tossed the state gun violations.
When states refused to convict the KKK, the federal government has stepped in.

(12,449 posts)KR is not an agent of the government, therefore he can't be charged with violation of civil rights, those that beat RK were, hence the Federal civil rights charges, and there is no violation of Fed. firearms laws by KR, the one being federally charged is his friend who bought the rifle for him, as in a straw purchase, which can earn one a 10 year Federal prison and a hefty fine.
Oh, and by the way, those cops that beat RK? They didn't kill him, they fucked him up pretty bad, but they didn't kill him, what killed him was a pool that he drowned in.
