Let me start out by saying... I know people who've received Sputnik and in the back of my mind I always thought out loud "God I hope it's more effective than saline solution..."
Well hot damn. Independent Published Research Study out of the EU shows that Sputnik came in 2nd place overall and had the highest "Keeps you from dying" protection of ANY vaccine.
Oh and the AZ and the CinoVac... not so much.

The Moderna Inc. and Russian Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccines both edged the version from Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE in effectiveness in a large-scale study of five different immunization shots conducted by Hungarian researchers.
Modernas vaccine was 88.7% effective in protecting against coronavirus infection and 93.6% effective against Covid-related mortality, compared with 85.7% and 95.4%, respectively for Sputnik, according to the paper published Wednesday on the website of the Clinical Microbiology and Infection medical journal. Pfizer came in third with 83.3% and 90.6%, respectively.
The wide range of vaccines available in Hungary allows for the assessment of vaccine effectiveness in a real-world setting in a Central European country and puts Hungary in the unique position of providing detailed information on multiple vaccine types from the same country, the authors, including Hungarys minister in charge of health-care, Miklos Kasler, and chief medical officer Cecilia Muller, wrote in the study.
Here's the actual study:

I know we should be highly skeptical of their numbers early in the pandemic, but I'm equally skeptical that they've decided to report accurately now.
Their current daily case rate is the worst during the whole pandemic right now (around 40k cases per day). And, so are daily deaths. (Around 1,200)
Curious numbers considering they're mostly using the best vaccine.

(64,995 posts)...it's not everybody and the numbers are worse now than ever, and Our World In Data shows them at roughly 30% fully vaxxed.
The numbers are still in conflict, because the antivax sentiment hasn't brought the vaxxed population to zero.
I have no reason to inherently distrust Hungarian researchers, but the numbers don't line up for me.

(64,995 posts)I looked it up.
30% is not "none" and their numbers are atrocious given the reported efficacy. It's a bit over 50 million fully vaxxed.

(43,314 posts)Macaya Douoguih, head of clinical development and medical affairs for vaccines at Janssen, said the pharmaceutical company will use results from its Phase 2a trials which tested the COVID-19 vaccine in a cohort of adolescents aged 16 and 17 to inform its trial in the younger population.
As we all know, the pandemic has had a profound impact on children and adolescents, Douoguih said in part. We are focused on the critical work needed to make our single-dose COVID-19 vaccine equitably accessible for all age groups. Preliminary data from the Phase 2a study will be made publicly available in the near future, she added. The company currently has four adolescent studies planned, the first of which will consist of individuals aged 12-17 years old, which will kick off some time this fall.
Pending preliminary results from that study, Johnson & Johnson hopes to conduct two-part research in children aged 2-11 years old, starting with those aged 6 and up. A third study would test children aged 0-2 years old, with a fourth and final study looking at the vaccines efficacy in immunocompromised and high-risk children aged 1-17 years old. In total, the company expects upwards of 4,500 participants of all ages in the upcoming trials.

(4,828 posts)The number of people who received Pfizer exceeds Sputnik, especially in the older population. I know the authors claimed to correct for age, but since the vaccines were not launched concomitantly, I wonder about how they were distributed.
