NASA pushed back its manned trip to the moon til 2025.
Maybe Bezos or Tesla could beat them to the punch by early 2024! It wouldn't be hard. Just get someone willing to be enshrined in the "anals" of history who wants to be recognized as the firstest and bestest of everything.
To that end I nominate TFG to be the first on the moon since the 70s with the help of our 2 billionaires! They can get Kirk and other 70s notables so why not the most notable wanting egotist currently on earth?
It really wouldn't be too hard getting him there. I'm sure Jeff would love nothing more than giving his biggest admirer such notoriety...and do it for free. In case there's not enough money, we can start a Go Fund Me site to get him the money or maybe the Chinese Space Agency would volunteer to help (they love him so much!). Of course, there's always Vlad to provide funds for him in case.
Then, in 2025, the NASA mission could bring him back...maybe even get a movie of him called "The Lunarian" or "The Man Who Soiled the Moon."
Oh wait. Just in. NASA MAY have to hold off til late 2025 or 2026. No problem. Set up a remote Fox news site for him and we can watch as he enjoys his extended stay and provides countless interviews.
Looking forward to a new face on the moon!
Then next we could send McCarthy, Jordan, MTG, Boebert...

(838 posts)Launching him north or south of the solar ecliptic would use way less fuel and delta-vee. Way less time and effort involved too. Of course, theres the problem of possibly littering interstellar space with our trash as a result.

(2,101 posts)if we skimp on the landing gear and retro rockets/braking rockets? We can also test the hypothesis that the moon is made of cheese. If it is made of cheese, then his landing would be soft. And a rat like him could live on the cheese.

(19,236 posts)We have the tech to remotely land supply drops and build habitats using operator-controlled drones right now. Why rush to get boots on the ground for a short stint like we did in the 70's, when we could build longer-term habitats allowing weeks or months of operation?
Same goes for Mars.

(38,311 posts)It doesn't now.
There's no science on the moon or mars that robots can't do better.
Without joyriding humans along for the ride all that life support equipment can be replaced with scientific instruments.
Fifty years ago landing men on the moon was a grand adventure.
Now it's just a "Here, hold my beer" stunt.
We need to focus on AI and robotics for space exploration.
Eventually, our machine servants will be in a position to host some humans -- unless, of course, the servants refuse to, and perhaps refuse to continue being servants.
