In Lakewood, a group of suspects ages 15 to 20 stormed a Home Depot store around 8:30 p.m. and grabbed tools such as crowbars, mallets and sledgehammers before getting away in vehicles that were waiting outside, FOX 11 of Los Angeles reported.
One entire section of hammers was completely cleared out, Los Angeles County sheriffs deputies told the station.
As many as 10 vehicles pulled up outside the store and the thieves donned ski masks before launching their spree, KCBS-TV of Los Angeles reported.
The theft prompted fears that the stolen tools would be used to commit more robberies at other stores in the area, the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department told the station.

It bears similarities to the flash-mob style thefts seen recently in California.

Best Buy stores in two Twin Cities suburbs were targeted by large groups of thieves in incidents that resemble the recent "flash mob" robberies reported in California.
The thieves struck on Black Friday evening at Best Buys at 14141 Aldrich Ave. S. in Burnsville and at 1795 County Road East in Maplewood, police have confirmed.
In Burnsville, a group of as many as 20-30 individuals swarmed the store shortly after 8 p.m., taking a number of items before fleeing a short time later in vehicles.
Police confirmed to WCCO that no weapons were used and nobody was injured in the incident, but that no arrests have been made as of this time.

(33,643 posts)and everybody knows this who's thinking of a job like this.
And that's part of why they do it as a mob, can't possibly detain/arrest all of them. It's like a 'school of fish' defense strategy.
What the authorities need imho to do is figure out where these people are organizing online so they can infiltrate, and predict where/when. Then you basically have a 'sting' with like 50 actual cops to arrest the 20 that show up for the heist.
I mean in some cities these might be literal gangs (LA, it seems likely) who organize something like this in person but I bet most of the organizing is online somehow.
