Can we engineer the virus in a lab so that it is benign?
And, super contagious so that the engineered benign virus becomes the dominant strain?

(12,514 posts)Killing its host doesn't help the virus. It needs us alive so it can spread itself around. Maybe Omicron is doing that -- spreading faster without killing its host.

(150,882 posts)First, we don't know how to "engineer" a virus in that way. Second, viruses evolve and change on their own. Third if it's "super contagious," it's going to make people sick, since viral infections always have some sort of symptoms.
But the real problem is that we don't know how to "engineer" a virus to give it specific characteristics. We can't predict what will happen when it infects people.
So, no.
