AxiosActor Matthew McConaughey announced Sunday he has no immediate plans to enter politics, closing the door on a potential bid for governor of Texas in 2022.
What theyre saying: "As a simple kid born in the little town of Uvale, Texas, it never occurred to me that one day I would be considered for political leadership. Its a humbling and inspiring path to ponder," the Oscar-winning actor said in a video posted to Twitter.
"It is also a path that I am choosing not to take at this moment," McConaughey continued.
McConaughey said he instead plans to "continue to work and invest the bounty I have by supporting entrepreneurs, businesses and foundations that I believe are creating pathways for people to succeed in life."

OP
Smart move. No matter what positions he takes, he'll alienate half his fans. No money in that.

He would only muck up this election with votes not given to Beto.
I was never a fan of him running from the get go... I am glad he has his head screwed on right with this.

As soon as I heard him open his mouth I cringed.

IMO, Matthew McConaughey (running as independent) is/was the only chance to unseat Abbott. Without going into the particulars, Beto, for all his many good points, has a flair for putting his foot in his mouth, and it is just the nature of the electorate at this time.
