Rep. Thomas Suozzi (D) will run for governor of New York next year, multiple news outlets reported Monday, positioning himself as a moderate in a growing field of progressives hoping to lead the Empire State.
Suozzi, 59, plans to announce his campaign Monday morning in a virtual press conference.
It is his second try at the governorship. In 2006, Suozzi lost a primary bid to then-Attorney General Eliot Spitzer (D) by a wide margin. Spitzer resigned two years later in a prostitution scandal.
I ran for governor once before. Didnt work out very well for me. Didnt work out for Eliot Spitzer, either, Suozzi joked to The Hill in an interview last month.

(96,882 posts)I would expect a challenge from the far left, but not a wide-open Primary.
Alternatively, Suozzi thinks he's vulnerable in his suburban district, and/or the Democrats will lose the House and he'll be in the minority.

I'm looking at what four Primary opponents says about how the Party establishment sees her.

(11,450 posts)which as far as a lot of downstate people seem to think is somewhere in Ohio. The last person from that area to be elected governor was IIRC Grover Cleveland.
Until she took over Cuomo's slot, I suspect she had very little name recognition in the NYC area - which is where most of the Democratic votes are.

(11,450 posts)They're very different places with very different mindsets.
I haven't voted in NY in decades and I don't remember how the gov/lt gov elections work, but I've always suspected that Cuomo had Hochul as a running mate because when he first ran for governor (without her on the ticket) he was trounced in Erie and Niagara counties, two usually stalwart Democratic areas and he felt he had to do something next time to appease them.

(53,443 posts)but yeah it was a 3 hour trip back then and likely more like 2 now. Speed limit was 55 in both PA and NY for quite a long time.

(96,882 posts)...he hadn't been there in decades. "Where you're from" is irrelevant as long as you know the issues of other areas.
