Ambassador Bridge Company Owner Moroun Ordered To Jail For Contempt

DETROIT (AP) -- A judge ordered the 84-year-old owner of Detroit's Ambassador Bridge to jail Thursday for failing to meet court orders on a construction project linking the span to adjacent interstates.

Wayne County Judge Prentis Edwards said Manuel "Matty" Moroun and top lieutenant Dan Stamper will stay in jail until they comply with a 2010 order to get the work going. It's unclear how long they'll stay behind bars.

"It is clear that the Detroit International Bridge Co. does not intend to comply with the court orders unless meaningful sanctions are imposed," Edwards said.

Lawyers for Moroun and Stamper asked Edwards to suspend his decision so they could appeal, but the judge declined.

Billionaire Moroun, Stamper jailed in Gateway Project dispute

Immediately following the judge's decision, Craig John, an attorney for the bridge company, said Stamper and Moroun had resigned and have no power over the company, a maneuver clearly meant to keep them from going to jail.

... After Edwards also denied a request to stay the order for an appeal for Moroun and Stamper, John asked the judge if the bridge company executives would be incarcerated until the project is completed.

"Read the order," Edwards said.

To which John replied: "I did your, your honor," prompting Edwards to announce: "Court is in recess," as he headed toward his office.

DETROIT — The Michigan appeals court has refused to release the owner of the Ambassador Bridge from jail.

The decision also covers bridge company president Dan Stamper. Manuel “Matty” Moroun and Stamper were jailed for civil contempt after their company failed to finish work connecting the bridge to interstates.

The appeals court says lawyers cited the wrong law in challenging Thursday's decision by Wayne County Circuit Judge Prentis Edwards.

One of the three appellate judges was in favor of freezing Edwards’ decision and freeing Moroun and Stamper.

Forget chicken-fried steak. Billionaire businessman Manuel (Matty) Moroun didn’t eat what the other inmates had for dinner Thursday in the Wayne County Jail.

Turns out Moroun and bunkmate Dan Stamper dined on a meal brought in from the exclusive Detroit Athletic Club, which is a couple of blocks north of the downtown jail where the pair were held overnight on contempt charges.
