(37,513 posts)So I won't bring those images here, with him holding the murder weapon and him doing the oh so impressive selfies with weapon in pants pocket flashing gang signs.

(24,210 posts)And one that has him praying like a little choir boy.
He murdered 4 people, use a picture that is appropriate.
Compare it to Trayvon Martin, who the media used his most recent and mature looking pictures after he was murdered. They couldn't wait to try to make Martin look as old as possible.

Sympthsical
(10,969 posts)Show a somewhat crazed pic of a murderer, and people will think, "Yeah, that's about right."
Show an angelic child who could never harm anyone, but suddenly four people are dead and it's, "What the hell happened here?!"
It creates this distance between picture and headline, so people are more likely to perk up and take notice. The brain wants that gap filled in.
Once you notice it, you see it all the time. Think of when a husband/father ups and kills his entire family. A lot of those stories aren't with his mugshot at the top. They'll be a picture of him and his family smiling, holding the kids, so All-American and wholesome.
"What went wrong?!"
It's a draw, and it works.

(3,750 posts)When the accused is a person of colour?
Sympthsical
(10,969 posts)But it happens often enough to be noticeable, and they've done it with PoC as well. You'll see it whenever a gulf can be created between expectation vs. reality. I don't keep a rolodex of offenders in my mind, so I can't think of examples off the top of my head.
But you'll see it with a lot of youth cases. If someone's 17 years old and is accused of a heinous crime, for some reason we end up looking at pictures of them when they're 12. Even when there are current pictures available.
And then you get the opposite. I remember the Aurora theater shooter and the mass shooter who almost killed Gabby Giffords both looked particularly crazed in their media coverage.

in his hand. He's like the cowardly Dylan Roof, too scared to take his own life so he's ruined many lives other than his and will do long time in prison.
What do these maniacs think is going to happen after they've shot up a school as they stand there with the gun in their hand, that they're going to go home once all the bodies are cleared away?

(19,382 posts)This kid is going to jail for life or most of it. This is not Rittenhouse. So far, this kid hasnt complained about jail conditions yet like another killer just did.

(61,033 posts)adolescent brains aren't fully developed. What the hell did this idiot killer think was going to happen after killing four and wounding many, that he was just going to go home to be with his parents?
And speaking of the parents, I have a feeling they're going to suffer some repercussions from what their killer spawn just wrought.

(9,173 posts)possible mental illness, possible bullying, bad parenting, and a family weapons fetish combined to make him take a dark turn. One of my sons was small, socially awkward, and bullied at times through his school years by various asshole kids--but we didn't keep a fucking arsenal in the house that my sons could access, and we were on top of his problems at school and his need for emotional support/self-esteem. Boys in adolescence have a such a hard time dealing with humiliation and alienation, and that's nothing new--but they can easily make their revenge fantasies a reality now, because American gun culture is fucking out of hand.

(6,499 posts)Why elevate no-name assholes like this.
If you've got the mainstream media doing it, sure, highlight it.
But there's a billion janky "news" sites online just doing clickbait farming for ad revenue. That's not indicative of anything.

That said, it would definitely violate the spirit and it's hard to see how a judge could justify an order.

(37,513 posts)To plant the idea in the jury pool & society at large that he was a good boy. The Instagram images of him handling the gun & him doing gang signs while the gun is in his jeans are pretty bad.
