My theory is toxicity affects the young with more intensity due to their vulnerability, size, inexperience..like lead in the water.

Our society's overwhelming romance with violence, and especially guns, is no different.

3. There was one here yesterday. I don't know how kids manage this.

This kind of thing changes you, and it’s being reported all over that kids are anxious about going to school. I hate to throw cops and metal detectors and such around, but I think we need a combination of school security and careful monitoring of kids’ problematic behavior and their parents’ responses to it. Maybe school needs to be a right with requirements. It’s a sad state, but dead is dead.

They’re caught in the middle. As I understand it, the shooter’s teacher saw him shopping for ammo online in class, the parents were called in, and the mom texted him saying to “be careful not to get caught—lol.” Yeah. lol.

5. we had a threat at my HS a couple weeks ago

It was posted by some kids on social media. They locked us down but did not send people home as the police quickly investigated and determined it wasn't legitimate. I don't know how much of these threats is related to political vitriol. For the kids I think its more a disruptive tool. They see how disruptive it can be because the threats get publicity at all levels and so they are tempted. I understand why every one has to be taken seriously given the current climate and events, but for kids its seen as yanking the fire alarm...

They are wise to take a time out. Listen for further conflict and stress. There could be copycats, there could be sympathizers. Everyone is under duress.

Well, two kids not far from where I live are now in jail with a million dollar bail each for having killed their teacher - ambushed her in a local park where she always went walking and clubbed her with a baseball bat, then tried to hide the body under a tarp. This is in small town IA, but was national news; some of you may have heard about it....

Between COVID, anti-masking and MAGA madness, and school shootings....I think I would largely keep my kids home or at least strongly limit their contacts.

Which plays right into right-wingers' play book...
