Mr.Bill
(24,305 posts)if she had ever seen a black fetus depicted. She said no, probably because when black babies are born, they are actually fairly light skinned. They turn darker after birth at varying amounts of time. I never knew this.
Babies of parents with dark skin may look noticeably lighter than their parents at birth and get darker over time. Typically, it takes somewhere between several months and several years old for a child's skin to reach its baseline level of color aside from fluctuations caused by time spent in and out of the sun.

(3,764 posts)My niece is very white. Her husband is from Dominica and is very dark. When their son was born the in-laws wanted a paternity test because they didnt believe that it was her husbands child. Not sure if they got the paternity test but the child did get darker. Not near as dark as his dad but not milk white like mom either. Hes a beautiful child.

(725 posts)The only time that this applies is when certain swirls babies are born to parents of 2 different tones that is to say, 1 VERY fair parent + 1 VERY dark parent. When there is a very large difference in tone between the mother & father & black babies who are premature; the way one knows that the kid will darken is by looking at the tips of the ears and the tips of the fingers, ie, the area surrounding the nail bed. If a darker color is noted in those areas then you know that the baby will darken to the shade in those areas.
I'm caramel with a golden coppery undertone. I was born with this color and have always been this color. black babies do NOT routinely change color, except in certain exceptional cases.
Mr.Bill

(15,461 posts)The OP is probably saying that generic descriptions of fetuses shouldn't always be white, and it's a nice change of pace to see a black one.
