Are the Crumbley's vaccinated? Did they have proof of vaccination cards on them when apprehended? Were Canadian Border Agents notified that these two might try to flee to Canada?
Lot's of questions here. Especially after seeing them exhibit this suspicious behavior.

(8,055 posts)and recent family experience. Need to not only have passport and vax cards, but recent negative Covid pcr test (they do offer those at the border for a lot of money, however, you just have to wait).

Somehow I doubt that rational thinking was a part of their plan.

(26,276 posts)At one time you just had to show a driver's license and maybe answer a few questions. Now you need an 'enhanced' license or passport and, no doubt, a proof of vaccination or recent test.

Abysmally poor decision making by these people.

Seeing how many times the dad added a 'now working at' post on Facebook was pretty telling.
And, if she was selling real estate - well, that's probably a thing of the past. They will surely blame others, but they have destroyed their own lives.

(24,371 posts)Like you said, show them your DL and you were pretty much good to go.
Windsor had a decent nightlife with some great pubs and clubs (plus Carling Black Label!) and tootling over for a few hours on a Friday or Saturday night was a breeze.
Got more crap from American Customs (Still do, I'm sure, even more so) coming back than the Canadians ever gave ya.

(26,276 posts)Maybe there still are.
We'd drive down for lunch and then do some shopping. There was a store that sold a really tasty Spanish Bar cake so we always came home with at least one.
We'd also go to Kingston, to a nice restaurant called 'The Rose and Thistle'. There was always a big bowl of Trifle on display.

(24,371 posts)It's just the other one is a railway and heavily patrolled! (I bet you know that)

I met a Canadian guy who walked through it, though.
He said it was scary as hell, and if a train had passed, he wasn't sure if he could have found a spot to get out of the way.

(21,582 posts)A river separates Detroit from Canada. So you can't just walk across. The two ways over are the Detroit/Windsor tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge. In theory all the border agents would have been given their names and pictures... it should be impossible to get across for them assuming the have the proper ID/Vax records. But in theory there is no way in hell the police shouldn't have been watching them in case they tried to run and... whelp... we know how that worked out.
Let's just say keeping them out of Canada required some pretty basic common sense displays of competence from the police, and my faith that they would have taken those steps is shaken at the moment.

(21,363 posts)Yeah, I agree, maybe they wanted to go to Canada. Being Trump lovers I doubt they were vaccinated. Guessing they are anti-government I doubt they had passports.

(36,745 posts)Even if they did make it over, Canada would have extradited them immediately when found.
Canada usually only hesitates when the fugitive is from a death penalty state and the crime could receive that punishment.
Northern Mexico wasnt really an option either with the drug cartel violence down there.

(38,321 posts)... they still wouldn't have found any refuge in Canada.
I'm pretty sure they'd enjoyed some high times in Detroit and thought they could hide out there.

(38,321 posts)That's some rough water.
My sister used to compete in Iron Man triathlons -- running, bicycling, and swimming absurd distances. I'm sure she could do it.
I've been to Detroit.
Like I said, a strong swimmer...
I was being sarcastic. I don't imagine this couple doing that.

Death in 1-3 hours.
Wetsuit would buy them time for sure.
They would have been smarter to steal a boat than get in the water.
The Great Lakes are known for sudden changeable conditions.
Johnny2X2X
(19,074 posts)And the water is patrolled very well too. Its a river thats several hundred yards across there. If youre fishing and your boat wanders across into Canadian waters you will be met quickly with a border patrol boat.
They watch that water closely. Kayaks might get it done at night. But then when youre over there its not like youre still not going to be pursued.

Smuggle them to Canada or Mexico. Then to somewhere with no extradition treaty.
This couple simply did not have the intellectual or financial resources to pull off a long term flight from justice.
