I hope its clear by now Roe is doomed, though I dont mean it will be overturned. That would be too obvious. I mean the Supreme Courts six conservatives will instead find ways to sabotage it without striking it down. That way the anti-abortionists will get what they want. That way moderate Republicans will be able to say Roe is still the law of the land. (I presume this is a preferred outcome for Susan Collins.)
Thats where were headed. That doesnt mean, however, the fighting will end. Far from it. The Christian Science Monitors Henry Gass reported Tuesday on how conflict over reproduction will continue post-Roe. Some states will amend their constitutions prohibiting abortion. Some states will do the same protecting it. (My state of Connecticut enshrined Roe in statute years ago.) The site of conflict had been national for over a half-century. Future sites will be local.
That conflict will be local, not national, means America over time will become a crazy-quilt of abortion laws in which some have rights and some dont, depending on which part of the country they live in. That reality reflects the notion that America isnt really one country. (Its instead a federation of regions with distinct personalities animating opposing political cultures.) And it reflects another thing: American women in their child-bearing years will not be treated equally under law on account of being American women in their child-bearing years.

(97,271 posts)Women already navigate various roadblocks to get the health care they need. This includes travel, overnight stays, sometimes for several days.
They risk losing their jobs, and if they have children, they need child care or a host willing to take them and their children in while seeking health care in another state.
It's already bad and it can easily get worse.

(13,003 posts)if they overturn abortions. It has been their "rally the crowd" for a long time.
Every election it's always the same to rally their voters to go to the voting booth: GAYS - GUNS - GOD -(ABORTIONS)
I agree, they will keep just chipping away at it, until it no longer serves their purposes.
I worry more what they will replace it with......LEGAL immigrants, etc

(13,341 posts)The fact that we cant ever seem to get there clearly shows how deeply ingrained misogyny is in our culture. For example, in 2021, we have a Texas vigilante law is patterned after runaway slave laws, and the Supreme Court had not enjoined it while its being litigated, allowing it to stand.
We have permitted a well, organized and vocal minority to pervert liberty and justice for all, where politicians and strangers have control over females bodies. They are only getting started with their race to the anti-science, women as farm animals, Dark Ages. Complacency is no longer an option.
