(94,518 posts)... I made it clear then.
me:
"I hate his conservative politics and the way he tried to con Americans into believing his party wasn't trying to end us... I opposed him in real time, while raising my family. I remember it well, he and Newt Gingrich and their 'revolution' working to end me. I fought those political and social battles almost constantly. One of the worst times in our political history, impacting hundreds of millions, and placing my family and countless others in jeopardy."

I agree that we shouldn't be dancing on Dole's grave here; however, do it because you aren't the type of person to do that -- NOT because you are under the absolutely wrong assumption that Republicans will somehow keep from dancing on any Democratic grave if you don't dance on one of theirs.

(54,725 posts)Bob Dole, the plain-spoken son of the prairie who overcame Dust Bowl deprivation in Kansas and grievous battle wounds in Italy to become the Senate majority leader and the last of the World War II generation to win his partys nomination for president, died on Sunday. He was 98.
His death was announced by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. It did not say where he died. He had announced in February that he had Stage IV lung cancer and that he was beginning treatment.
A Republican, Mr. Dole was one of the most durable political figures in the last decades of the last century. He was nominated for vice president in 1976 and then for president a full 20 years later. He spent a quarter-century in the Senate, where he was his partys longest-serving leader until Mitch McConnell of Kentucky surpassed that record in June 2018.
As the old soldiers of World War II faded away, Mr. Dole, who had been a lieutenant in the Armys storied 10th Mountain Division and was wounded so severely on a battlefield that he was left for dead, came to personify the resilience of his generation. In his post-political career, he devoted himself to raising money for the World War II Memorial in Washington and spent weekends there welcoming visiting veterans.

"You and I are way down here, somewhere," Dole grinned into the camera, with his best "Mister Rogers-meets-Freddy Krueger" smile. "The president's idea is to put a mountain of bureaucrats between you and your doctor," the Senate Minority Leader added, indicating the dyspeptic diagram alleging federally mandated confusion.
The chart, even more than Dole, was the star of Tuesday night's official Republican response to the president's State of the Union address -- 200-odd reddish organizational boxes linked by a dense web of angry lines -- and Dole continued to brandish it yesterday as he lampooned Clinton's proposal on all the morning talk shows.

CNN had a list of the bipartisan legislation that he saw through Congress. There was a lot, but two I remember are the Americans With Disabilities Act and food stamp reform. Would that happen in todays climate?
But lets hold the man responsible for Trump. Never mind the fact that most people of his generation felt a higher loyalty to party. Thats misguided, now, for sure. But Im not trashing the mans 70-plus years of service over that.

(18,778 posts)WASHINGTON Former Senator Bob Dole of Kansas sat slightly slumped in his wheelchair on the Senate floor on Tuesday, staring intently as Senator John Kerry gave his most impassioned speech all year, in defense of a United Nations treaty that would ban discrimination against people with disabilities.
Senators from both parties went to greet Mr. Dole, leaning in to hear his wispy reply, as he sat in support of the treaty, which would require that people with disabilities have the same general rights as those without disabilities. Several members took the unusual step of voting aye while seated at their desks, out of respect for Mr. Dole, 89, a Republican who was the majority leader.
Then, after Mr. Doles wife, Elizabeth, rolled him off the floor, Republicans quietly voted down the treaty that the ailing Mr. Dole, recently released from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, so longed to see passed.
A majority of Republicans who voted against the treaty, which was modeled on the Americans With Disabilities Act, said they feared that it would infringe on American sovereignty.
https://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/05/us/despite-doles-wish-gop-rejects-disabilities-treaty.html
His own party gave him a big "fuck you" with this vote, and yet he remained committed to the party to the end. He could have spent his time in office promoting reasonable policies and accommodations with the Democrats, but nope.

I have a former Congressman (R) who when he left the job he immediately became a lobbyist and lived in DC. So where were his interests when he "represented" his district?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Dole continue to live in DC after retiring from the Senate?
