Bob Dole was the first Republican Presidential candidate I ever voted AGAINST.

I voted for George Bush Senior in 1988 (my first Presidential election) and again in 1992. By 1996, I was politically aware enough to know what a shitshow the GOP was (thanks for being so repulsive, Newt Gingrich!), and had embraced my inner liberal by then. in 1996, I voted for Bill Clinton, and have never voted for any Republican since then, at any level on the ballot.

If the electorate was not so closely divided, I might be tempted, as a liberal, to vote for a liberal Republican over a conservative Democrat. But the GOP has pretty much purged the party of liberals and moderates. So if voting for a less-than-liberal Democrat means keeping a majority, along with committee chairmanships, I'll do it.

Voted Clinton. I was living the conservative vision of America. I voted for Poppa in 88 because I didn’t know any better.
