(9,998 posts)Lots of sacrificial lambs, the lower level insurrectionists, would receive light to medium sentences, while those who essentially orchestrated the day's events, would get away without any consequences.
Some are still holding on to the belief that suddenly, circumstances would change. I don't want to stand in the way of their beliefs, but I know that it's no more than fantasy at this juncture.

(16,723 posts)Not since Watergate has there been meaningful prosecution. The system is broken and the "guardrails" are gone. This will immensely please the evil-doers, but they already know it. July for Bannon hearing when he requested October? How about next week and a non-knock FBI raid to haul his ass in, like Roger Stone or Manafort if he doesn't comply? And that's when Jeff Sessions was AG, FCS.

(35,325 posts)It was obvious on January 6th the military was ordered to stand down and let it happen. I mean they let
the capitol of the US be under attack for over 3 hours and did nothing! The military and Trump sat back and
let it happen until they saw it was failing before doing anything.
I watched the insurrection all afternoon on January 6 th and kept thinking WHERE THE FUCK IS THE MILITARY.
There in no doubt they were ordered to stand down until they saw it was going to fail.
Bannon's lawyers want his contempt trial set for next October. I wonder why that is?
Judge said no. It's set for July.

(43,328 posts)blow up in our face.
Sununu is not going to run for Senate in NH (nor is Ayotte). Hassan was fairly likely toast if Sununu had run (NH flipped both chambers from Blue to Red in their statehouse in 2020 and is trending more Red overall atm). It was my number one chance to lose a seat via a flip of a Blue to a Red seat until Sununu declined. Ayotte had a decent shot as well.
The potential blow-up-in-our-face part is the new favourite to win the Rethug primary is a far more radical RWNJ, Bolduc, and he would be far worse to have in the Senate than Sununu or Ayotte.
Brian Sandoval refusing to run in Nevada is good for us too, but Adam Laxalt is hardly a pushover, and IF he gets in, he is more than a wee bit younger than Sandoval (almost 3 full 6 year Senate terms younger, he will be 44 in August 2022) and thus could be there for 30+ years.
IF Manchin and/or Sinema refuse to allow a filibuster carve out for the voter rights bills, we are in deep shit as well, especially when combined with the gerrymandering, the lose of seats via the Census, and then the horrid historical performance for first term Dem POTUS's in their initial midterms.

You can whine, or you can educate yourself. I recommend starting here:

(11,730 posts)The question is, do we have sufficient proof to charge and convict?
This is the good AND bad of our legal system (aside from the flagrant inequality, which is just BAD), that you have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, that people actually, materially did something illegal before charging and convicting.
It can be frustrating, but it is the way our laws are set up.

(6,588 posts)How many of us thoroughly understand the kind of evidence that is necessary to meet the standards of proof to convict someone of "leading a coup"? Based on my limited understanding of the laws involved, I doubt such evidence exists.
I also see lots of folks refer to specific acts that they feel constitute "planning" or "leading," when under US law those acts come no where near what legally constitutes planning or leading. They are "awful but lawful" as some would say.

(922 posts)It takes time to put together a successful prosecution, especially with some many individuals / participants.
We all know who this leads to. Unfortunately it going to be up to NY prosecutors and attorney general of Georgia to actually enforce penalties against TFG.
