Rittenhouse pushes back on praise for killing "probably two of the worst on the planet"

Rittenhouse Rethinks Trip to Kenosha
Teenager retreats from interviewer's praise for killings

The recently acquitted Kyle Rittenhouse says that, in hindsight, the trip from his home in Illinois to Wisconsin during protests in August 2020 was "probably not the best idea." Rittenhouse, then 17, took an AR-15-style rifle with him and shot three people; Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber were killed. On a Monday night episode of the podcast "You Are Here," Rittenhouse said he can't change the decision to travel to Kenosha, NBC reports. "But I defended myself and that's what happened," he said. Rittenhouse was found not guilty of all charges, including homicide, last month.

Rittenhouse pushed back at praise from the interviewer for the killings. "Of all the people that you shot at, you killed probably two of the worst on the planet," said Sydney Watson. Rosenbaum and Huber had criminal records. "Congratulations," Watson told the teenager, per the Hill. "Good job, you." Rittenhouse answered, "It's nothing to be congratulated about." Rittenhouse has said he went to Kenosha to protect property during the protests against police violence against Black people. "Like, if I could go back, I wish I would never have had to take somebody’s life," he told Watson.

It would have been better if he had made such an admonition from behind bars, but oh well.

I’ve run across the sentiment before, that protecting property by killing another person is justified.

Makes me sick.

Maybe this is a sign that he's not going to be the GOP's poster boy. I think it means, at least, that he's thinking for himself. Maybe he learned something while he was in lockup.

That he showed up to kill. He was a dumb kid in over his head. It's nice to see that even though his actions were deemed legal, that he also understands they were avoidable.

but rejected several attempts by the skilled troll of an interviewer to milk him for the usual narratives.

He held to his position of regret, that he wished he hadn't been there, killed anyone, etc. Of note, he still faces federal charges, and he certainly has to have that in mind, but that doesn't mean he couldn't be basically sincere also. We'll see. Even if we wanted, most of us couldn't avoid hearing at least some of what he does in future. For now, an 18-year-old, it was a good job.

WaPo: Watson told her guest, Kyle Rittenhouse, that it was “kind of impressive” that “of all the people that you shot at, you killed probably two of the worst on the planet. Congratulations. “Good job, you.” Rittenhouse, 18, responded that the killings were “nothing to be congratulated about.” “Like, if I could go back, I wish I would never have had to take somebody’s life,” he said. Watson... asked if Rittenhouse regretted going to Kenosha in the first place. ... “Well, hindsight being 20/20, probably not the best idea to go down there,” Rittenhouse said. “Can’t change that. But I defended myself and that’s what happened.”

Meanwhile, many on the right have valorized the teenager. ... ... ... Tucker Carlson said that Rittenhouse “tries his best to do the right thing at a time when almost no one else in the community is trying to do the right thing.” But during his appearance on “You Are Here,” Rittenhouse pushed back on that narrative. “You don’t like when people call you a hero?” Watson asked. “Does it make you uncomfortable?” “It does — it really does,” Rittenhouse said, adding: “Because I don’t think I did anything heroic; I just defended myself.”

Despite the offers from members of Congress, Rittenhouse told NewsNation’s Ashleigh Banfield he’s not interested in entering politics “at all.” Rittenhouse said during the podcast on Monday that he will attend Arizona State University in the spring. Responding a listener’s question, Rittenhouse also said on the podcast that he plans to destroy the rifle he used in Kenosha. “You’re not going to, like, sell it?” Watson asked, suggesting to Rittenhouse that he could make a lot of money. “We’re just having it destroyed,” Rittenhouse reiterated. “I think that’s the best thing, and that’s what I want to do with it.”

Interesting idea if he's being encouraged to wave his gun and the flag and he's beginning to see how he's being used. I hope so. But if they want that and others hate him for what he did he doesn't have much of anywhere to go. That's dangerous.
