Would you volunteer to have a chip implanted in your brain if it benefited you while disabled?

And, if so, would you change your mind knowing that Elon Musk is behind the initiative?

In a Wall Street Journal interview, controversial billionaire engineer Elon Musk announced that Neuralink, his brain-interface technology company founded in 2016, hopes to start implanting microchips in human beings as early as next year.

This chip is used to link neurons in the brain to any kind of computing device, in order to record and stimulate cerebral activity. Intended for quadriplegics and sufferers of brain or spinal injuries, the chip would allow people to communicate their thoughts via computers and mobile devices.

“As users think about moving their arms or hands, we would decode those intentions, which would be sent over Bluetooth to the user’s computer,” the website states . “Users would initially learn to control via virtual mouse. Later, as users get more practice and our adaptive decoding algorithms continue to improve, we expect that users would be able to control multiple devices, including a keyboard or game controller.”

During a live-streamed interview at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council Summit, Musk said the chip is working well in monkeys. The company is doing extensive testing to confirm that it’s “very safe and reliable”, and that the device can be safely removed.

And still sometimes offer something of value.

Few people have absolutely no redeeming value.

To implant a microchip in your brain?

Put it that way and it sounds a lot less beneficial...

If the benefits are reliably shown to outweigh any downsides, why not? Who is behind the initiative is of limited importance in this case because while Musk may be a dick in some respects, it does not mean his efforts should be automatically dismissed.

If I was quadriplegic or otherwise seriously impaired, I'd try damn near anything to gain back some of my abilities. I hope it works for them! I lost my leg below the knee last year. I have a prosthesis and I'm able to get around, but I was in a wheelchair for months before I healed up and could get my new leg. Being in a wheelchair sucks. There are so many places you can't go, and it's a real pain in the ass to travel anywhere. I can't even imagine what it's like for a quadriplegic. If this works, all I can say is God bless Elon Musk. Maybe he's not all bad.

I get a pre-processor with quick access SSM I think that would solve the issue.
