Ananti-Vaxxed/Covis-Hoax Relative of mine called me saying the omicron variant is going to kill all you vaccinated people.
Now I will be honest dealing with My SIL who is very ill-non-covid so I haven't been able to keep up. Last I heard people vaccinated can get a mild case and that omicron is in 18 states.
How much am I wrong and what did I miss?

(7,611 posts)Public Health at Brown University. Those who have had boosters will be fine.
Back in the 1960s, my Junior High teacher taught what vaccines were and basically how they worked.
It sometimes seems that I was one of the very few who did learn that, since many posters on various forums don't seem to have learned this and instead come up with imaginings instead.

(5,009 posts)Difference is this: In early studies where they use blood from vaccinated people and test it with omicron, they see how much of the virus is neutralized by the blood. The level of neutralization is much lower for Omicron, but still there is some neutralization, which means your immune system to a degree is able to see Omicron and recognize it a little bit.
If you are unvaxxed, you have NO recognition of Omicron, so there is a lag time while the virus is replicating (like crazy) in your body before your immune system can recognize a completely new threat and mount a defense.
Get vaxxed, and your chances for mild symptoms are much better even with Omicron.

(5,009 posts)There is always some risk.
People who are vaxxed are lower risk for severe outcomes (based on some early evidence we now have).
And the risk of vaccine side effect is so incredibly small it doesn't change the risk calculation at all.
If you don't go straight to the risk analysis, then you will be faced with the "well, I read about a person who was vaxxed and died, and another who was unvaxxed and survived" type of silly logic.
Good luck with your conversations!

(18,859 posts)But Delta is still the dominant strain so be careful.
And yes, being immunized doesn't seem to be much of a roadblock for getting infected with Omicron.

(31,158 posts)and the vaccines don't protect that well against it. But all cases are mild so far, probably because most people are vaccinated. If 70% of the population was unvaccinated instead of vaccinated, then it would be hitting mostly unvaccinated people. No evidence it's going to kill anyone yet but chances are that unvaccinated people are going to have most issues with it.

have immune system issues which you would know nothing about - protects herself from a stranger who is in her vicinity and is maskless, and you think its ok for YOU to be offended?
Thats looking for something at which to be outraged. Youre new here. You may get some slack because of that. But you need to read the TOS and perhaps read posts for a little while before making off-topic, knee-jerk responses. Otherwise youre not likely to be here very long.

(38,818 posts)I had to review old DU mail to remind me of his nickname. I got one (or more) of his special threats so I had some DU Mail correspondence around.
Gues you have to threaten the right kind of people to have internet threats taken seriously. Back in the day, typing in a few of his more vile threats turned up a dozen or so websites he was similarly threatening.
