Canada Just Made It Illegal to Subject Anyone to Conversion Therapy
Canada has officially banned so-called “conversion therapy,” the widely discredited practice that seeks to change LGBTQ+ people’s heterosexuality, in a landmark move. The bill, which was approved to become law on Wednesday, will take effect 30 days from then, on January 7.
Under Bill C-4, the Canadian criminal code will amended so that those who cause another person to undergo conversion therapy, including providers, will be “guilty of an indictable offense” with a possible prison sentence of up to five years. Promoting and advertising conversion therapy will be criminalized as well, with a possible sentence of up to two years. Those who profit from conversion therapy are liable for a prison sentence of up to two years, and removing a child from Canada to undergo conversion therapy elsewhere would also become a criminal offense.
The bill states that conversion therapy “causes harm to society because, among other things, it is based on and propagates myths and stereotypes about sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.” That includes “the myth that heterosexuality, cisgender gender identity, and gender expression that conforms to the sex assigned to a person at birth are to be preferred over other sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.” It continues that “in light of those harms, it is important to discourage and denounce the provision of conversion therapy in order to protect the human dignity and equality of all Canadians.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commemorated the occasion with a Wednesday tweet. “It’s official: Our government’s legislation banning the despicable and degrading practice of conversion therapy has received Royal Assent - meaning it is now law,” Trudeau wrote. “LGBTQ2 Canadians, we’ll always stand up for you and your rights.”
