BRANDON, Fla. A shooter was arrested Thursday after a firefight with Hillsborough County deputies.
Part of Brandon Blvd. was shut down in both directions for much of the afternoon while the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office worked their investigation. The shootings happened around the 1 p.m. hour Thursday.
The sheriff's office says deputies were called to the report of shots fired at the Wash Up-Brandon car wash off Brandon Blvd. Sheriff Chad Chronister said deputies arrived within moments, and upon arrival, the sheriff's office says deputies witnessed Daniel Lighty, 35, firing a weapon.

He was taken into custody after he ran out of bullets. This is Florida, after all...
The police took care not to escalate during the incident, which has been described as a mental health crisis.
I never see reports on DU of police doing their job well. It creates an artificial and often racist view of the police. We have over 330 million people in this country. Those rare incidents that make the cable news are not the norm. Most incidents are like this one.

Big shout out to my plumber, Mike, who successfully extracted a slimy hairball the size of whiffle ball from my bathroom sink last Saturday.

Brandon Blvd is a main road that is east of downtown Tampa. Thankfully no one was injured.
They have cameras on everyone, and a giant screen in the 911 center to see everything.

(1,969 posts)Endless cable news is suffering mentally from a bizarre view of the world.
I live in a quiet working class/middle class neighborhood but if you were to read our Nextdoor you would think we were in Mad Max.

(23,372 posts)Does this refer to the view that police are committing racist actions?
I dont think this is just a matter of the killings.

(21,753 posts)Conservatives should look into this. A man with only 15 rounds of ammo is hardly a man at all. No wonder the poor guy went off.

(2,406 posts)Too often at DU, there is a reflexive idea (among a vocal few) that police love to kill people -- especially black people . Other DU members are too intimidated to counter this (allegedly) progressive attitude with counterexamples.
If a gunman is killed by police, there will inevitably be posters who will proclaim that *obviously* he was black. Whereas a gunman taken into custody alive will *obviously* be white. If you look at the actual numbers, this is not true. In fact, whether black suspects are more likely (in a statistical sense) than white suspects to be killed rather than taken into custody is an open question, subject to variables on which we don't have good data. It's not well established by empirical evidence.
