can kiss my fucking ass.
In 1952, newly minted US Navy Lieutenant James Earl Carter was placed in charge of an effort to contain the catastrophic effects of the world's first nuclear meltdown at the Chalk River plant in Ottawa, Canada. Carter was detailed to this assignment having been personally selected for the Navy's nuclear program by Admiral Hyman Rickover (a man famous for not suffering fools gladly).
Upon arriving on scene, Jimmy Carter had himself lowered into the radioactive Hell that was the plant core in order to assess the situation. (90 seconds was the prescribed time limit for the absorption of a radiation level which was hundreds of times higher than today's scientific knowledge would describe as safe. His urine was radioactive for months afterward.)
Under Lieutenant Carter's direction, the core was shut down, and in the words of Canadian officials, "Ottawa was saved". The situation was that dire.
This is the man that Ronald Reagan (who spent WWII making inspirational movies for the home front) described as weak and ineffective.
This is the man who countless Fox"News" personalities have used as a punching bag for over 40 years.
This is the man who Donald Trump, between consuming buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken, called a "loser".
So fuck 'em. Fuck every single right wing jackass who ever belittled one of the finest men ever to ascend to the Presidency.

(11,766 posts)To mature and be the nation that our founding documents aspire to. To actually lead the world by example with maturity, social consciousness, and sound thinking or to retreat from the world stage and mired in our own consumerism and self indulgence.
Reagan came along and told Americans that we were the best, and didn't need to do anything to show it.
Which do you think Americans would choose?
Carter was correct. Americans have always had an inflated sense of our own importance, but there was a time where we did actually aspire to lead and be better. Conservatives have encouraged us to rest on past glories and our stature has shrunk steadily with brief periods where Democratic Presidents have tried to repair the damage.

(17,002 posts)Indeed, Jimmy Carter was living his beliefs - the same "beliefs" these fake "Christian Conservatives" claim - and he continues to do so.
I SO wish they'd round up these "Conservative Fundamentalists" that believe TFG was 'chosen by God' and make them sit in a public debate with Jimmy. I think they would prefer to be 'no-shows.'

(1,000 posts)And for the reason posted, he was always against nuclear energy. He famously put solar panels on the roof of the White House. Reagan was supposed to make us feel all superior with his sunny disposition. I remember watching the vote come in and the RNC playing "Midnight Train to Georgia," smug, arrogant, tacky, and an insult to Gladys Knight and the Pips to have their music used in such a snarky manner. The next thing the smug, arrogant, clueless, criminal (hold the hostages until after the election, Iran/Contra) was take the solar panels off the roof.
Imagine where we would be if we had responsible adults in charge on energy independence? Then we went to ignoring AIDS because only "those people got it." "Great communicator" my ass.

Prs Carter is humble enough to probably not bring it up.
I wasn't even born yet (by 1 yr). Yes, it was in Canada but can't quite figure that it wouldn't have floated somewhere around even in the mid-late '60s. And NYC isn't so far from (oh) Canada. (Love Canada & Canadians)

(848 posts)But the separation's clause disallows your point.
Even though I agree, shouldn't there be an equal disdain for Trump?
Judging one based on religious beliefs can go wrong. Here it is!
Roy Rolling
(6,992 posts)There is no comparison of Carter to others. Saying Carter is not a hypocrite has nothing to do with the separation clause. Adding another president by comparison is fairTrump proclaimed to be a Christian but was a liar and betrayed the guidelines many of that religion follow.
He could be a good whatever, just not a hypocritical asshole. And not allowing for simple morality as a requirement of any religious faith is a logical flaw.
The judgement is not upon the religious beliefs themselves, but on Carters discipline in being a living example of those beliefs. Which I think is commendable, and Im sure you do, too, my friend. Happy holidays.🤓

(7,263 posts)I was sold on passing it on to Panama once I got all the details.
The President sent them an actual signed letter of thanks for their efforts. Not a mimeograph - an actual ink pen signature.
His triumphant 1976 campaign was the first campaign I volunteered for, and as I turned 18 in 1976 I could vote for him.
Sad memory, I had a rethuglican roommate when I was in my late 20's; I had put an original Carter/Mondale bumper sticker on my big steamer locker trunk I used for a coffee table (it was covered in stickers from places I travelled too or things I wanted to remember) - while I was at work the asshole peeled it off and tore it up and left it on the floor one night when he was drunk - I was so mad. I'm in my 60's and still have the trunk - and the bare spot where the sticker was torn off is still visible.
President Carter is in my top 5 all time good people.

True
Fact Check - True
Carter was indeed part of the clean up operation at Chalk River, and had to be physically lowered into the damaged nuclear reactor in order to help clean, shut down and replace the reactor.
The shutting down of the reactor was crucial in preventing a potential nuclear disaster in the Canadian city, as a full meltdown could have eventually occurred.

Chew on that; Reagan let American hostages rot in captivity to help his election chances. That alone should have put him behind bars.

We listened to a speech by one in Boston. I later found out one was a neighbors brother. Reagan flew them all over the country at tax payer expense to show them off. The old man was head of the CIA. An un led had his companies confiscated in Germany because he was still doing business with the Germans. Came home, ran for Senator.

LT Barclay
(2,640 posts)not being part of the discussion about the date of release was something along the lines of "I was in the bathroom". Sounds like intentional effort to establish plausible deniability to me.
So here is one that is pure speculation. My dad was not very political. Never talked about candidates or issues. My parents never used racial slurs, never talked bad about another race or religion, but did inform us of certain news items, such as when the homes of African-American families were burned before the could move in near us (Castlewood development in N. St. Louis County). Anyway, he was a computer programmer (IBM considered him one of the best in the Midwest). After the failed rescue attempt he only said that he couldn't believe the military would sacrifice some of their own just to make a sitting president look bad.
I've never heard any supporting evidence, but don't doubt it either.

(38,549 posts)1984..(not sure)..But mandatory seat belts (which were among the first, not last safety devises on cars) have saved
thousands of lives... Perhaps more..Seat belts, then air bags, warning when cars are passing, etc., etc.
Carter was the first to make seat belts safety features.. .mandatory!
Before Carter, ordered them to be there, they were optional, but most front seat sitters had them. Later people were
required to put them on, and are still required to do so, front and back And guess what? People put them
on.
Now, many states have required it,and many lives were saved because of seat belts, and other safety devises............................. Imagine if you can how many lives have been saved by Carter's order
....I am sure some people here at DU know a story or two about people were saved by a seat belt...Carter ordered it in 78 or 9) for 84.
...........Tell them who ordered the seat belts. If they are "pukes" let them know who saved their lives..

(42,980 posts)According to a Facebook group, Randal Thom, 60, was the creator of Front Row Joes, an online assemblage of Trump supporters.
Thom was known as Front Row Joe because he had attended so many Trump rallies. He adored our POTUS and was known personally by the secret service. He had been interviewed by dozens of magazines and newspapers and been on TV interviews all over the world. He had an infectious laugh and sense of humor, the post said.
A search warrant application filed Wednesday says Thom ran into the back of the pickup and rolled into a ditch. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected and died at the scene. Investigators reported evidence of alcohol use by Thom.
