and then attacked him with a pole, do you think he would have gotten five years in prison? The white thug who stormed the Capitol and did exactly that, on film, was sentenced to five years.
A black man would have been fortunate not to be shot on the spot. And, if caught on tape, would have been charged with attempted murder and received the max. And they probably would have added a few more charges on to ensure that he got life in prison with no chance of parole.
Looks like Trump's storm troopers are being invited for another try. Unless we pass the voting rights act.
And please, don't tell me about Manchin and Sinema blocking the voting rights act. Two turds blocking democracy doesn't fly with me. These two can be pressured, arm-twisted (and if necessary blackmailed) into falling into line. It's either that, or a fascist country beginning with the election of 2022 and coming to a conclusion when the thugs take over the entire federal government in 2024.
The Democratic leadership and our president must, MUST, make the voting rights act their number one priority and then get it passed doing anything they have to do. If not, America is over. Our freedoms are over. And Nazis will be invited for tea at the White House.
And by the way, what is Merrick Garland doing? Seems like he brought a penknife to a nuclear war.

(96,043 posts)Do please let us now how 'These two can be pressured, arm-twisted (and if necessary blackmailed) into falling into line.' It's a common thought, I have it myself on occasion, but no one as yet has said how it's to be done....

(15,388 posts)Do you really believe that Manchin and Sinema aren't vulnerable? Do you really believe that they haven't done things in their lives that they wouldn't want ANYONE to know. Many, many years ago, President Lynden Johnson passed the voting rights act, the equal rights act, Medicare, Medicaid, and so much more. You think he got that done without knowing where "all the bodies were buried?"
Manchin and Sinema can be forced to cooperate. It's up to our president to make it happen.

Easy to make threats when you have those majorities and can find votes elsewhere.

Politicians' job is politicking. That includes arm twisting and pressuring and cajoling and convincing and trading.
I don't know how to do those things, but is it so unrealistic to think that those in the profession DO know how to do it?

(580 posts)The federal judge who sentenced Robert Palmer to five years in prison is African-American (born in Jamaica) and she was appointed by Barack Obama.
Merrick Garland, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema have nothing to do with sentencing of January 6th defendants.

(3,921 posts)and got sentenced to 5 years in prison. The white insurrectionists tried to overthrow the gov't and most are getting slaps on the wrist. It's how the system of white privilege works. Whites are viewed as inherently innocent thus sending them to prison is viewed to be painful and tragic, ie 'why mess up their lives, they simply made a mistake.' Where for non-whites being treated roughly and harshly is viewed as necessary and justified, and no benefit of the doubt is given.

Posting on the internet is a record. A record that could be used against you.
But since I do not believe fascists will take over and our democracy ended, I feel no worry posting about how I hope TFG leaves this existence soon and that all Magahats are idiots.
