Damning report. I wonder when political incompetence rises to manslaughter, or does the law basically shield elected officials from killing Americans to play politics? Presidents always make decisions that lead to people dying, that's part of sitting in the big chair. But they generally listen to all the options and try to do what's best of the country even if that means some people might die (Biden's Afghanistan pull out being a prime example). But drumpf wanted to downplay the virus he was afraid would result in him losing the election, and that feels like murder to me. Not just the burden of the presidency.
The thing I've always found dumbfounding about it though is that if he had gone full out trying to stop the virus, he porbably would have gotten re-elected, but a leopard can't change its spots, and he can't help but lie, cheat and steal, even when it actually helps him to do the right thing.

WASHINGTON The Trump administration engaged in deliberate efforts to undermine the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic for political purposes, a congressional report released Friday concludes.
The report, prepared by the House select subcommittee investigating the nations Covid response, says the White House repeatedly overruled public health and testing guidance by the nations top infectious disease experts and silenced officials in order to promote then-President Donald Trump's political agenda.
Dr. Deborah Birx testified the Trump WH could have reduced Covid deaths by 30 to 40 percent

In August of last year, for example, Trump hosted a White House meeting with people who promoted a herd immunity strategy pushed by White House special adviser Dr. Scott Atlas. The subcommittee obtained an email sent ahead of that meeting in which Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House Covid response coordinator, told the vice presidents chief of staff, Marc Short, that it was a fringe group without grounding in epidemics, public health or on the ground common sense experience. Birx also said in the email that she could go out of town or whatever gives the WH cover on the day of the meeting.
A few months later in October, National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins called for a quick and devastating published take down of the herd immunity strategy, according to emails obtained and released by the subcommittee.

(9,947 posts)Instead TFG called the cv19 pandemic a hoax and politicized the situation to polarize voters and as described in the OP.
What an idiot.

She should be shamed and shunned into oblivion for her obsequious toadying behavior.

(60,076 posts)There's that pesky "do no harm" thing. She may be the worst violator of that in history.

(42,426 posts)He probably hoped he could infect Joe Biden, because they were on the same stage together. Remember? Chump was screaming his fool head off the entire time. He stole half of Joe's rebuttal time too.
Not even a week later he went into the hospital. By then it became obvious that he was already in a bad way. A lot of people were needlessly infected including Hope Hicks and Chris Christie, among others.

(21,352 posts)I wondered if TFG just didn't want the bad publicity to stain his image so he played it down. Once a narcissist like him makes a decision like that he cannot admit he was wrong. Other GQP "leaders" naturally followed his lead to avoid being alienated and targeted by him and the cult. Plus the "base" hated wearing masks and vaccines which reinforced their dereliction.
Maybe TFG and Bolsonazi can share a cell at the Hague.
