The qualified endorsement contains a lot of hedges, including the concession that if LGBT issues are a voters highest or only priority, then Governor Romney may not be that voters choice (I should think not). But the bottom line is that this group of gay Republicans endorsed a candidate who supports denying gay men and lesbians equal rights.
Mr. Romney has endorsed a federal anti-marriage amendment, more than once. He supports the Defense of Marriage Act, which forbids the federal recognition of marriages involving partners of the same sex and permits the states to ignore marriages made in other states.

(326 posts)And who is the last Democratic candidate the Log Cabin Republicans endorsed?
Gay or straight, a Republican is a Republican is a Republican.

I have a number of gay friends who were republicans.
They left that party long ago.

Call it part of my "conspiracy theory" but have ya'all seen, V for Vendetta?

I have a friend who is gay and is also one of the wealthiest people in this state. He's a die hard right winger.

(1,881 posts)Its all a charade put on by the GOP for votes. I mean, how dumb do you have to be to keep voting against yourself? I'm not talking about teabaggin' trailer trash. That's a given. There's structure and money behind this supposed conservative gay group. It makes no sense... unless its nothing but a scam.

(78,249 posts)Jane "None Too" Swift had named her chief of staff, Patrick Guerriero, as her running mate. Once Rmoney Bigfooted her out of the race, she begged him to keep the openly gay Guerriero on the ticket. According to my inside dirt, he was agreeable to this -- but Queen Ann was not, fearing that any association with Teh Ghey would damage hubby's presidential prospects. Out went Guerriero, whose next gig was as head of LCR.

(39,961 posts)self-deportation for gay people. The day I speak out against my own best interests, in my own country, is the day I don't deserve to live in it anymore.
Americans, and particularly *this* American, are braver than that.

(39,961 posts)They are Republicans first. Nothing else matters except being a Republican, not even if you see your brothers and sisters getting gay bashed on the street a block over. Adherence to being a Republican is all that matters.
I can't imagine living that way, and violating my principles for the sake of acceptance by a political party. I am far too proud of a lesbian to vote for a party that virulently hates me and all that I am.

(32,886 posts)I actually gained a measure of respect for them at that point.
The GOP retaliated by encouraging the guy who founded GOProud to form his organization, which is a complete and utter shill organization that grovels at their feet and accepts any amount of abuse. As bad as Log Cabins are on occasion, GOProud is many times worse in terms of selling out their constituency to support the GOP.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)that people will put up with that type of political abuse just so that they have some element of prominence in the GOP.

(27,310 posts)"Their endorsement of Mitt Romney isn't just shameful - it's insulting. Mitt Romney stands for nothing positive for LGBT people. He supports a federal marriage amendment (which was a reason for Log Cabin to refuse to endorse George W. Bush in 2004). He supports McCarthy-like investigations into our community for evidence of 'harassment of Christians'. He opposes the repeal of DOMA. He opposes ENDA. He's even said things as basic as the right to visit your sick or dying loved one in the hospital is a 'privilege' and not a right.
"On top of all of that, Mitt Romney is a liar. He has told so many untruths and changed his positions so many times throughout this campaign, how can Log Cabin - or anyone - trust a word he would say? A person with no moral compass goes whichever way the political winds blow. With Mitt Romney in charge of the ship of state, we would be a rudderless nation with nothing but luck to keep us from crashing into the rocky shore - and Log Cabin Republicans believes this is the best their party and our country can muster.
"It's a disgrace. A once venerated and decent organization has become a shell of itself blithely pandering to the least common denominator. This is politics at its worst - when a community sells out its own people for the gain of a few individuals. There is little doubt that Clarke Coooper's position on the RNC finance committee played a major role in this decision. Of course, so did their blinding fear of GOProud nipping at their heels.
"So there you have it - the Log Cabin Republicans, who screamed loudly and forcefully for months that liberal groups and LGBT movement posturing weren't going to affect their endorsements have instead allowed the interests of money sucking GOP insiders and the fear of a conservative performance troupe to decide their endorsement for them.
"It's reprehensible. Have they no decency?"
