Event cancellations continue as CDC declares omicron dominant strain in US

WASHINGTON (TND) — From Broadway shows to major sports games, events and gatherings are getting canceled across the country.

New York state set another single-day case record fueled in part by the omicron variant, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said now accounts for 73% of coronavirus infections across the country. The CDC has officially declared it the dominant variant in the U.S.

In New York City, Mayor Bill De Blasio says he'll make a decision by the end of the week on whether the New Year's Eve celebration in time square will go on.

The National Hockey League, which is headquartered in the city, announced Monday that it is pausing its season Wednesday because of several COVID outbreaks. Games will resume Dec. 27.
