And tell Manchin they may have another vote for it as it is now. Make him sweat it out and vote no, and my guess is he'll reverse his position rather than do what he said he would do. That way it gets passed without it being weakened more by Manchin, and stop being bullied into everything , and every time getting bills stripped down by him. If that fails so what, he won't vote for it anyway. He'll continue making up excuses why he can't vote for it.

(50,989 posts)no republiQan can be convinced to vote against the bloc. But there must be at least one or two of them who are having an affair they don't want their spouses to know about. Time for arm twisting.
And for those who will tell me, "Democrats don't do that! We are too morally pure! It will make us exactly like them!" I will answer, "Yes. Our 'moral purity' is the problem. And it will make us like them? Really? You have not been paying any attention at all."

(58,785 posts)For good measure, Schumer also informed members that it was time to force the hand of Manchin (and of Arizona Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema) on voting rights as early as the first week back in January. If Senate Republicans continue to abuse the filibuster and prevent the body from considering this bill, the Senate will then consider changes to any rules which prevent us from debating and reaching final conclusion on important legislation, Schumer wrote. In a pointed reminder to Manchin of the late Senate rules maestro and fellow West Virginian, Schumer noted, As Former Senator Robert C. Byrd said in 1979, Senate rules that seemed appropriate in the past must be changed to reflect changed circumstances.
A Senate caucus meeting will take place Tuesday night, possibly the most anticipated caucus meeting in years."
That's tonight. I think Friday will be the actual last day of this session.
Fwiw, outraged as we are by the betrayal in this turn of evenets, it's normal for important hegislation to be battled over for long periods. The ACA was declared dying or outright dead a number of times before we finally battled it successfully to passage. In the end, the toughest opposition was from those within our own party who wanted a more cautious, less comprehensive beginning. At one point Pelosi had to tell Obama and the rest of the leadership that she would pass the house's comprehensive form or nothing.

(26,756 posts)Too many DUers really can't seem to appreciate the realities of a 50/50 senate.
Schumer only has the power to schedule votes because he has 50 senators backing him up.
Your average Republican senator can gum things up substantially just by failing to agree to unanimous consent... but a Democrat who doesn't want a quickly-scheduled vote to be held - has much more power.

(35,361 posts)there. We lost that with the loss of Unions. Somehow the Republicans have managed to shift the blame for the loss of manufacturing jobs on the unions. The Republicans moved the jobs to China and unions get the blame. It was Republicans votes that overwelmingly passed NAFTA but
Clinton got 100% of the blame.

(68,632 posts)While rushing around sticking it to Manchin may seem like a good idea, it is not... a moment of satisfaction...a fleeting moment. A far better solution would be to find a compromise. If it is true that Manchin will vote for a bill without the child credit and paid family leave, then let's do it. There is good stuff in that bill including universal Pre-K...other stuff too. Let not the perfect become the enemy of the good. And attacking Manchin could drive him to switch parties which means no more judges. Priorities folks...let use our heads and make the best of this situation. In the end, it moves us forward.
