(8,387 posts)In all likelihood, Amazon would fire the driver. That's not part of the job.

(4,616 posts)A vicious attack, no. If that dog wanted to it could have tore up that dog as well as the girl in the time it took that driver to get there.
NEITHER dog should have been out off leash. The girl and her dog got lucky. Kudos to the Amazon driver. I'd be curious to see how it all started since the video starts after the "attack" started.

This is why small dog owners want to socialize their little dogs early to avoid aggressive and inciteful "small dog syndrome" where they constantly snarl and go after bigger dogs on a leash. That is NOT TO SAY the pitbull was not ultimately the problem (he was and had NO BUSINESS being off-leash and thus out-of-control like that)-- but this kind of incitement doesn't just lead to such behavior from pitbull breeds. I see this constantly on bike trails and hiking trails from all types of dogs--even passive Labs and Goldens when encountering an "overly compensating, insecure, and thus paradoxically aggressive" small dog.
Dogs are a species that excel in reading "body language" and act accordingly. That is part of the reason they have so completely adapted to humans. But, they likewise use it to react to their own species. Teach your dogs to be comfortable around other animals as puppies--as soon as they complete their vaccination series--and the nonaggressive body language will follow, along with avoiding a host of potential problems.
Kudos to the Amazon delivery person. She was spot-on.

(73,726 posts)owner had the nerve to rail at my daughter about it. in front of the dog. she was lucky the dog wasnt actually an out of control menace, like she said, cuz he would have been happy explain some things to her. she thought his napoleon act was cute.
i have a big mutt that started off well socialized, and got a lot of training. but between the 2 out of control little dogs next door, and the people who dont realize that letting their dog piss on another dog's gate every damn day is a bad idea, i have to keep a close eye on an otherwise good boy.

(113,971 posts)an additional point that the owners of small aggressive dogs seek to ignore at their own peril. And, guess what... I've seen animal control ticket owners of small dogs being aggressive and inciting at dog parks--as well they should. Training is not just for big dogs.

(47,423 posts)Small dog is in its own yard. Large dog is off leash without an owner. What do small aggressive dogs have to do with the video?
I did not see any aggression from the dog being attacked either there. The other bully type dog was running free with no owner or leash ( also appears to have no collar/ tags maybe) and should be reported to ac.

(12,667 posts)Most dogs would have given up once that little dog had been picked up.
Good on her and the other man.
I once was standing next to a pair of twin 2 year old girls talking to their parents. When this huge dog, don't even remember what breed, came charging towards us. Out of instinct, I picked up those 2 little girls and still the dog tried to bite at them. So, I kept turning in circles keeping their little legs as high as possible and away from the dog's mouth. The owner kept saying he won't hurt them, he won't hurt them.....then why did he charge them and keep jumping on me?
I think the mother and father were just stunned because they did nothing until the owner came to drag the dog off me. Then I gave one each of the twins to their parents. They just looked at me like I was weird. I explained that the dog would have hurt them and they seemed a little concerned then.

(7,952 posts)The attacking dog was after the other dog, and I think when she picked it up and spun in circles the attacker thought she was playing keep away. Good on the driver for helping to separate them and let her escape with the other dog.

(18,767 posts)..fighting to the death.. i was in satin pjs and barefoot. My blood was the only blood on the walls. That boxer was serious about killing that little dog. That Amazon driver knew the target of the dogs rage was the smaller dog. Good for her for stepping in... this is why they ALL need to carry repellant.
Ive seen it happen. When some of these dogs attack they mean to kill. I saw a friends dog almost killed by another dog (an almost fully grown pitt puppy) when we were at an outing. This was between two dogs that had been friendly before. It took 3 of us to separate the dogs and all our blood was everywhere. After seeing this I started carrying repellant when I used to walk my dog through our neighborhood. Everyone should.

(15,426 posts)What if that would have been a little girl, or what if that dog had turned on that teen?
Seeing any dog running around like that bothers me because I've been attacked several times in my life, and do not trust larger dogs, let alone pit bulls. I've known some genuinely good dogs, gentle souls, and most are fine. It is the owners who let them run, don't take care of them properly, do not train them adequately, do not socialize them, that are at fault.
As to this particular dog, when a dog is aggressive like that, it needs to be reported to Animal Control, taken and put down. The owners need to face serious fines and possibly jail time. I know there's a whole cheering section out there about how wonderful pit bulls actually are, but the owners of this particular dog are selfish prats.
Moral of this story: If you are gonna get a dog, make sure you have the TIME and the PATIENCE to socialize and train the dog so it does not present a danger.

(4,616 posts)The girls dog wasn't on a leash either. The video begins AFTER the altercation started. How do you know what started it all? Especially since the video left that part out. What I observed, the dog in question didn't maul the girl OR the Amazon driver. They got lucky. That could have been far worse.

(2,053 posts)But little dogs are WAY more aggressive because no one gives a shit about little dogs. You can just step on them like a big or hurl them over a fence. I believe we should work on the aggression of little dogs just as diligently as we do larger ones. Little dogs are like brats at the park. They start shit but when someone retaliates the second one gets in trouble. Keep on eye on little yappy lap dogs.

(35,075 posts)I wonder if that's because the girl was standing her ground? And the spray didn't really seem to do much or maybe it did and I can't tell because dogs can't wipe their eyes?
Kudos to the Amazon driver. That was nice of her.

(13,480 posts)The owner has him on a leash, but the dog barks and snarls and leaps at everyone and the owner, a good-sized man, can barely hold him back. If the leash broke, that dog would do serious harm to someone. I simply do not understand people who want dogs trained to attack. I know dogs will try to protect their homes, but they should be trained not to attack on a public street. And mine is one of the safest neighborhoods around, so theres no need of an attack dog for protection.

(16,344 posts)And it was a bad dog. Its prey drive was activated. I didnt really hear the teen give any commands at all which is what I wouldve been doing in my most booming voice. The Amazon driver did that just great, which gave the attacking dog something else to think about briefly.
Great job by the Amazon driver. Hope the teens dog is ok.

(3,157 posts)I was a punter and played soccer too. The best way to break up a dog fight that involves a large dog is to get behind them. Grab their back legs and lift their butt straight up into the air. You can control the dog that way and it can't turn around and bite you. I used to work at a dog day care and have lots of experience. I've also done this many times at dog parks with some very large dogs. It works like a charm. I am saving my ire for the owner of that dog.

Whenever we take our 110 lb. German Shepard to the dog park they constantly harass him. A couple of days ago we arrived at the park and he took one look across the field & relized they were there & decided he would rather go for a walk

As for little dog syndrome, Yes, it can be a problem.
Our dog is very sweet but, when we go to the vet we muzzle him- just in case. - Wouldnt want to run into a little Yorkie!
