Why would he need to cite 'media stories' concerning something ... that was supposedly actually said ... TO HIM?

Either he was being pressured, or he was not. So why did he not just say 'these things were/were not actually said to me'? That's what should matter to him, in his position. He shouldn't be making decisions of this magnitude based on the media.

Sounds sketchy to me, a way to weasel out of responsibility for his inaction.

being pressured, and is using the 'media stories' routine as a tacit admission to it's validity.

Which is arguably an even bigger story. And lame if he won't just admit it outright.

He doesn't want the wrath of Trump to come down on him.

I am not quite buying his refusal to give Trump what he wanted was entirely for altruistic reasons. His story has the smell of CYA.
