From a FB friend.
My daughter (active duty USAF) had to drive pass this mannequin of our president hanging from a noose just outside the gates of the NC state fair in Raleigh. She said it was disturbing how the body swung back and forth as cars drove by with children and veterans.
Edited to remove photo of Obama effigy being hung after understandable complaints by readers.

(6,500 posts)BELIEVE IT OR NOT, this incident is not a racist statement and is only slightly about Obama. It is about a murder case. Here is a quick summary from memory, will expand once I've looked at the archives a bit.
This has been an ongoing story for several years in NC. The "display" was created by the brother of a man murdered in eastern NC some years back, William Henry Phipps. The Phipps family claim that local officials were involved, the investigation thwarted, and all this has been covered up by a continuing conspiracy involving those at all levels of the NC courts, AG, Governor Perdue, the media (especially WRAL, its reporters, and its owner). Many of these people are represented among those hanging. Some are Dems, some are Repubs. As I understand, the Obama effigy was added following some "failure" by the US DOJ regarding this case back a couple of years ago.
The victim's brother takes his trailer display wherever there are events that draw large crowds such as the State Fair. While certainly offensive and unpleasant, his display is still legal as "free speech". He has taken it to NYC, DC, and various places outside NC. He drove the truck display around Charlotte during the convention.
We have plenty of racists in NC, the Phipps might be among them.
BTW There were more lynchings outside the South than in the South. An ugly part of our entire nation's past and present.

So at least readers of this thread can get the full story--the OP is misleading in describing it as only Obama--it includes other effigies. Mr. Phipps is kinda obsessive and has a grievance about his brother's death, which was not investigated and he blames corrupt politicians.
Go to YouTube--search "Gallows of Effigy"
(Yes of course it's offensive, but it is not exactly what it seems at first glance).
unc70
(6,500 posts)I also posted here at the top if the thread to limit the confusion. After this, I'm now curious about a couple of back stories about this murder case. Plan to check with family members that live in that area.
marions ghost
(19,841 posts)Yes it's an interesting case. Looks like Mr. Phipps "advertizing" is having its desired effect--I'm curious about it now. He certainly wants attention. Seems to be his way of "working through"--fascinating from a social psych POV. Wonder what happened.
Although I don't appreciate the inflammatory and misleading way the story was presented here by the OP--at least we're now more up on it. I don't blame DUers for being outraged at what was posted. It is hard to defend such a disturbing creation as "free speech," especially when you're unsure of motive. It's offensive for sure, but I think there's a case for the man's project being about perceived political corruption rather than racism. Of course he gets a lot of mileage out of the shock value of hanging figures. Reminds me of those people who put Jesus on the trailer hitch.
Re. The instant South-bashing that ensued--oh well. My entire family is from VA, WV and NC, so I'm used to it. It is understandable, given the tension of the times and US history. Thanks unc70 for helping to explain & deflect.
NC and VA are working very hard to try to elect Obama, not to mention other Dems. I hope this little detour into Bizarre NC (I think that's a book actually) doesn't deter DUers pulling for NC. With the spotlight on all the swing states, NC really needs to feel that "blue team" spirit from outside the state. Means a lot.

It's offensive but his motive is (apparently) not race--all the other effigies are white and he has another agenda. The guy's been doing it for 3 years, with police, secret service knowledge. The OP was misleading in suggesting it was only Obama hanging. Yes it's offensive & (debatable) free speech but so far, he's allowed to do it.
But of course IF someone took a picture and did just what you say, posted/tweeted ONLY the Obama effigy for their own purposes...well.....
UNDERSTAND I am not taking up for the guy--just to say that it may not be all it seems. Get the backstory.

They are the worst kind of stupid ever to exist.
I really hope this is kept up. It is so disgusting--I feel an adrenaline surge--just wanting to pull it down. I can't imagine what I would say to my children about such ugliness.
But it should stand. People need to see what "the other side" stands for. Let them see the hate. The backward, evil stupidity that sits on their side.
Let Independents see this.
Let swing voters see this.
Let undecideds see this.
Let reasonable Republicans see this.
Then maybe---some of them will GET why the modern-day Republican party has evolved into a hornet's nest of hate and stupidity--and maybe they'll decide to side with the Democrats where diversity, compassion, equal-opportunity, love and integrity rule the day and our party.

it's offensive for sure-- but the guy claims not racist. The other figures hanging are white. He's an angry old man whose brother was killed and he blames the Dem politicians of NC. It involved a federal investigation which was halted, which is why Obama is there (!?) Phipps has been driving the thing everywhere including in NYC and DC for 3 years. It's terrible because it is threatening and depressing, but it is (arguably) free speech. The Republicans of course want nothing to do with it. The Secret Service said they know about the wagon, as do local police. So far, they haven't stopped it.
So far, the hanging gallows on wheels hasn't gotten Phipps what he's wanted all along which is a new investigation into his brother's death.
The guy IS obsessed and a bit nutso, for sure, but it's newsworthy--and it certainly will be interpreted as racism.
See what you think.

There are many effigies, the rest of them white. You said "the body" but it's bodies. The man who drives these things around claims it's NOT a racist statement. Obviously it's offensive and I am not taking up for him, but there IS more to the story than what you are presenting. The man is a bit of a nutcase--but the secret service and the police keep tabs on him. Seems more or less harmless...he says he thinks it's healthier than what McVeigh did to express himself. (!?)
