North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn and his wife, Cristina Bayardelle Cawthorn, are divorcing after eight months of marriage
Cawthorn announced their separation Wednesday, citing his job as a Congress member as a factor in their split
He claimed the couple was 'committed to make things work' but quickly realized they were unable to balance his role as a public servant and their marriage
The couple wed in an intimate April ceremony after sharing a whirlwind romance; Bayardelle said she knew he 'was the one' after four months of dating
Their wedding followed an about six-month engagement
During their engagement, about 30 people accused Cawthorn of making unwanted sexual advances while he attended a Christian college in 2016
--------
In February, it was revealed that Cawthorn's ex-classmates claimed he sexually harassed women at Patrick Henry College in northern Virginia.
The alleged victims said they were warned not to go on so-called 'fun drives' with him in his white Dodge Challenger 'because bad things happened'.

(5,338 posts)I think he has realized that now, as a psycho rethug Congressperson, he has plenty of women who will throw themselves at him because of his position and connection to that orange gibbon. I think he started to realize that they stopped flirting because he is now married, and he does not like that. But, what do I know?

Does that mean that the wheelchair is a prop? (I know that some people use both, legitimately, but I wonder if his is not a cynical calculation.) I believe that many members of Congress manage to be married (even for years), and still do their jobs. She married him knowing about all those allegations??? 30 in the year he was at that school??? Busy little predator. And, finally, that cross. Something a bit unsettling about that pic.

(91,623 posts)My original post, which I pretty much retract:
His ex-wife is not the first naive Christian girl to be taken in by a "reformed" sociopath...
I cant explain it any better than that. The desire of a young impressionable woman to believe that a combination of Jesus and a good woman will turn around a bad man is really powerful. Even older women fall for it.
As for him I doubt he saw her as anything more than a beard for his politics and his predations.
I applaud her instinct for survival and that she got the hell out before there were any kids.

require Jesus. When I was in college a million years ago there was this guy who was a known date rapist. Women continued to date him. And get date raped. I was friends with a girl who did. They definitely think it won't happen to them, because - reasons

(25,844 posts)I will admit mostly images which are fairly intriguing Ill leave it at that. In my humble opinion the only reason a woman of this type would marry a guy like this is for personal advancement. She probably realized that she wasnt going anywhere and that he was an absolute catastrophe in every way shape and form. I dont think she will have any problems finding a second husband, so dont worry too much about her. 😀

(42,936 posts)Seems like the family values choice would be to keep the marriage and ditch the job. Also, lots of other people in the same job somehow manage to keep a marriage going. Of course, they're probably not sociopathic a$$holes.

It seems like gone is the day you see a legacy Ivy League education on these people. They're all college drop outs, high school drop outs. Most from upper middle class families, and none seem to have taken a civics class in their life. I can't imagine how hard it will be to run the house if the GOP win in 2022. The last two GOP speakers left the job in complete disgust. Herding idiots isn't easy.

(66,819 posts)well-dressed, totally fail when it comes to shoes.
I confess I'm an extreme example going the other way; I own about fifty pairs of shoes. A pair for almost any occasion, and/or outfit imaginable.
But I've seen guys wearing fine suits or other excellent tailored clothing with the rattiest shoes in the world.
Before COVID-19, I was a regular at Seattle Opera. Now Seattle is a pretty egalitarian place. I see guys at the opera wearing anything from black tie to cargo shorts and Birkenstocks.
But I'll never forget the time I saw a guy wearing a superb tuxedo; impeccable black tie and all the accessories. And on his feet, a pair of faded, scuffed black loafers! Seriously? After all that effort expended on everything else.
IMO, a man is not truly a detail-oriented dresser unless he sports a good pair of shoes.
Anyway, this is Madison Cawthorn we're talking about. He's a total loss, no matter what he's wearing.

(13,421 posts)Having clearly established that, I have wondered about how difficult it is to be newlyweds dealing with the stuff he's been associated with since they got married. That first year after we were married saw more fights than we'd had the entire three years we dated and lived together. Imagine that coupled with the public humliation of your new husband being publicly accused of being a sexual predator AND the knowledge he's viewed by many to be a traitor. I can see how it would be too much to deal with. Now, imagine thinking about LIVING with all that for the rest of your life...
I'd leave skid marks getting away from that, and I'd bet a lot of other women would too.
I have no idea what she's like as a human being, but I do hold a certain sympathy for her at this point. Clearly, she made a poor decision to marry him, but I really wonder how well she knew him before the wedding. My mom is fond of saying, "Marry in haste and then repent at your leisure." Mom is a pretty smart lady.
