Because cats cornered or not are precious pure love and sweet and perfect to be compared to tfg.
Tfg is more like a lamprey or a leech,a tube worm, a bot fly,a flea...

(9,354 posts)enough intelligence to realize it is cornered ... and frankly, 'm not sure what cornering a tapeworm would look like.
Trump** seems to be able to know he is cornered, although it takes him a while. So I think we need to take license to use another animal, one whoch is dangerous when cornered and can realize when it is cornerd.

(3,064 posts)There was a lot of conflict in Texas, particularly the Hill Country over slavery. There were many German, Polish, and Italians who immigrated to Texas, particularly Germans.
They were vehemently opposed to slavery so that put them at odds with Anglo Americans from places like Alabama and Tennessee who brought their slaves with them, even though slavery had been abolished in Mexico.
The #1 and maybe only freedom the Texians gave a damn about was the freedom to keep their slaves. So the Texas Revolution against Mexico was a microcosm of what happened 25 years later with the Civil War.
And there was plenty of violence between the anti slavery and slavery contingents. The anti slavery colonists actually outnumbered the pro slavers in some parts of Texas.
Texas was a dangerous to live in in the mid 19th century. Setting aside the violence between white Texans there was always the threat of raids from the Comanche and their allies, the Kiowa. Texas, as well as parts of New Mexico and Colorado, was often referred to as Comancheria, and for good reason.
Their raids often took them into Mexico. The Comanches were the best horsemen as well as the most merciless of the Plains Indians. The Sioux and Cheyenne didn't intrude into Comancheria.
I lived in two very small towns just North of San Antonio in my early to mid/late teens. My best friends had last names like Ott and Schraub. I'd go to parties and the sausage was great and someone almost always pulled out an accordion to play. This was in the early/late '60's.
A lot of the older people still spoke German to each other.
I loved living there. The people were warm and friendly and the scenery was beautiful. And many of my good friends were Mexican Americans as well. They referred to themselves as Mexicans and we were Anglo. The most beautiful girl I ever saw had a German father and Mexican mother. She got most of her beauty from her Mom. She was also kind hearted and a brilliant student.
Guess I kinda rambled on all over the place. But I loved the time I spent in the Hill Country.

(3,019 posts)I had to move away from the Hill Country in 2018, to the Houston area. Ive been trying to figure out a way to get back there since I left - totally hate living in Houston. But now the prices are so high, it may not happen soon.
There were also a lot of Czech immigrants, but I think most of them settled in small towns closer to Houston.
Hispanics culture has had a big hand in shaping Texas, but Im not sure we can count on them to help turn Texas blue, due to their anti-abortion, often Catholic beliefs. And it seems to me that many Hispanic men equate success with being Republican. And those whose equality the Democratic Party fights for often dont vote.

(3,064 posts)Beautiful country, beautiful people with lovely manners. Sometimes I'll locate asshole/white supremacists I used to work with and tell them they're actually " mud people." I'll enclose a shot of a beautiful Northern Chinese girl with skin like ivory or alabaster. And if they are capable of any self awareness they may look at their own less than pure white skin and pause to think. But I doubt it. And I digress.
I spent most of my life in the DFW region, mainly Denton. But plenty of it in Dallas, Old East Dallas mainly.
And there were a number of years I spent in Austin. From 1969 to the mid/late '70's. With an interruption or two in parts elsewhere, Flagstaff, Southwestern Colorado,California, etc. I was what you'd call a genuine hippie. I'd hitch hike around the country barefoot. I didn't need a lot to get by on.
And God, did I love Austin. Back then it was the place to be for me. The "San Francisco of the Southwest." And living there was cheap. You could panhandle on Guadeloupe Street to make rent money.
The Armadillo World Headquarters, Soap Creek Saloon, The One Knite, Broken Spoke, the original hole in the wall Antone's on Sixth close to Interregional, the Continental Club. So many great venues with such great live music. I was there when Waylon and Willie escaped Nashville for Austin. And now Austin's an internationally recognized Mecca for music, and not just Americana, my personal favorite. And there's even a turnoff marked Hippie Hollow where we'd all skinny dip en masse. They've even built a set of landings and stairs to it. Texas's only de facto nude bathing spot.
Back then, the city population was 180,000. It didn't stretch from Georgetown to San Marcos. No Pickle Parkway and no need for it. Now you can expect a traffic jam from Georgetown to Austin if you stay on I 35.
But you're right about Texans of Mexican descent often being quite conservative. I've met a number of them who literally despised the undocumented from Mexico and then Central America as much as any white MAGAt.
They don't vote Democratic in as high a percentage as,say, Puerto Ricans in NYC. But they will pretty consistently vote Dem. 60% of the time. And with consistent get out the vote efforts and the increasing hostility and violence they suffer from The Dotard's followers that percentage should increase.
Of course, I still follow US politics closely, even from here and what I see I don't like. Looks like we're heading to " it doesn't matter who votes, it's who counts the votes" like Stalin's, and now Putin's Russia.
I've voted in every Presidential and off year election since I was old enough to vote. My first vote was for McGovern. I knew he'd lose in a landslide but I was proud of my vote.
And over here I definitely got overseas ballots so I could vote for Beto in 2018 and against The Dotard in 2020. I was in the States in 2016 so I most definitely voted for Hillary.
At the time I was living in Plano, caring for my mother as best as I could. Northwest Plano, affluent part of town. I was in and out in under 15 minutes. And in South Dallas the polling lines stretched around the block and people waited for hours.
I'm coming for a visit this next year, mid June to late July. It's been almost three years so I'll no doubt be shocked by changes. I'll spend the first and last week in Texas. And a good friend of mine with a well maintained Toyota 4x4 and I will spend a month out West.
I've thought of coming back but I wouldn't even consider it until after the 2024 elections and if they turn out badly I'll probably never go back.
May go to Ecuador or Chile after that, if I don't just stay here.
Can't believe I left out the Czechs. But it's the ethnic German people I knew best.
Hell, I wrote a short story. Hope this doesn't bore you. But yeah, I'm Texan, first and foremost. My Mom's grandfather, my great grandfather, left Georgia for Texas one step ahead of the law after breaking a friend of his out of jail. That really establishes a guy's bona fides as a Texan.
Enjoy the rest of your Christmas. I enjoyed reminiscing about Texas and my experiences there.
It's 9:30 AM Sunday morning here in Bangkok. Helluva time difference.
Take care.

(12 posts)I have been coming here for many, many, many years and I am familiar with the rules.
The following is a question and not meant to support or condone what anyone on the right has done. What I am about to say may result in me getting the boot and if that is the case then so be it.
Trump has been accused of everything under the sun and we have watched breathlessly as talking heads on CNN, MSNBC and writers in the NYT, WP, Atlanta Constitution, LA Times etc, etc have gleefully announced variations on the claim, "we got the bastard this time and he will go to jail for sure", and yet in the end when the info is all revealed nothing happens....nothing at all. A truly excellent example if the Russian Collusion thing which after being hyped to death by every talking head in creation turned out to be the biggest nothing in political history.
And now here we go again with the Insurrection thing and Trumps planning it all along. Somebody please explain in easy language WHY this is so different? I am sick to death of being let down and discouraged after being whipped up by claims of absolute proof in this or that scandal.
Anyone?

(255,532 posts)We keep getting our hopes up, sat through two conclusive impeachment hearings, and yet he's still out there spouting his lies and inciting his followers. He's had accusations from numerous women, we see others brought down, but not him. Letitia James ran for New York Attorney General and won, one of her campaign promises was to go after TFG for his illegal activities in New York, but that was in 2019. And then there was the January 6th violent insurrection, there is actual film footage of TFG calling for it, asking his supporters to follow him to the Capitol - and there have been hundreds of arrests and convictions of those who did just that, yet he's still out there, still challenging last year's election and threatening to make a speech on January 6th to challenge Speaker Pelosi's commemoration. If not now, when???
Welcome to DU, you're among those who share your frustration here.
