https://www.popsci.com/military/air-force-b2-spirit-bomber-google-earth/The 172-foot-wide B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, which costs nearly $2 billion in todays dollars, can sneak past enemy air defenses with the same radar signature as a small bird, but you can also spot it on Google Earth as long as you have an internet connection.

(6,390 posts)...Russia, China and a few EU nations already know how to track them. Shoot, they may be tracking them right now.

(7,285 posts)I work with radars quite a lot. Neither Russia nor China have radars near as good as ours.

(6,390 posts)That is, we always underestimate the opposing side.
When the stealth fighter was shot down during the Yugoslavian civil war, neither China or Russia was interested in it. When we lost a stealth chopper to get Bin Laden, only China was interested in the wreckage. All that kind of tells you something.
And as for underestimating, we were surprised when Russia fired off missiles from the Caspian Sea to hit Syria from ships thought too small for their technology. Whoops. And we also thought when they got involved with Syria, it would be a quagmire for them. Surprise!
Officially, Russia and China don't have any significant stealth aircraft, despite a Soviet Scientist, Petr Ufimstev, essentially inventing the technology. I'll posit that they probably do, but haven't produced it in large numbers and have kept quiet about it. Remember, our military doctrine relies on projecting power, both Russia and China however, rely on defense (granted China is starting to move to a projected doctrine as of late). So the need to develop stealth aircraft isn't as important as having a SAM to take them down. They may have cheap radars for most things as it serves its purpose, but we don't know enough of where it counts.

(7,285 posts)Im not talking out of my ass.
Russia and China both understand how our stealth tech works. They also understand the principles of our top radars. Thats a very different animal from being able to do it. Take a look at their too lone radars
they are a generation behind ours. They arent hiding some advanced capabilities. They have bragged that their s-500 missile system can detect and engage the B-2, F-22, and F-35. Our assessment was that they could not. And indeed, when the S-500 was deployed in Syria, Israeli F-35s flew right by them. So
yeah

(6,390 posts)But, i will still be a bit skeptical. Both China and Russia have been good at subterfuge and sadly, here in the US, we've been all too often under estimating things.
Call me a pessimist, but I'm the type of person who always expects the worst and prepares for it. But, pleasantly surprised when i doesn't happen. Just my viewpoint.
