Uncounted: Inaccurate death certificates across the country hide the true toll of COVID-19

In Cape Girardeau County, the coroner hasn’t pronounced a single person dead of COVID-19 in 2021.

Wavis Jordan, a Republican who was elected last year to serve as coroner of the 80,000-person county, says his office “doesn’t do COVID deaths.” He does not investigate deaths himself, and requires families to provide proof of a positive COVID-19 test before including it on a death certificate.

Meanwhile, deaths at home attributed to conditions with symptoms that look a lot like COVID-19 — heart attacks, Alzheimer’s and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease — increased.

“When it comes to COVID, we don’t do a test,” Jordan said, “so we don’t know if someone has COVID or not.”

But digging around I found that he ran unopposed as a Republican. In an 87% white county in Missouri, I'm guessing he didn't get around much. Maybe I'm wrong, I hope so. The other thing I couldn't find were his qualifications to be a coroner. Looks like all they need in Missouri is a warm body who doesn't really care.

Covid cannot be counted as such UNLESS they were diagnosed with Covid before being admitted to the hospital. Testing here has been discouraged by the administration to keep the number of positives low. No trust in the Stitt administration at all...

we will get a tally of total deaths, and then see how many were above the statistical norm. THAT will be the real count of COVID deaths.

The large wave of nursing home deaths was swept under the rug during the first few months of 2020. Early testing was inexact, and of course the vaccines hadn't been approved yet.

I don't think we'll ever get an exact correct number.

When I was a kid there was a pathologist who ran as a Republican and was always elected, about his third term no Democrat filed. So it was just him.

this was small town/county Indiana.

i think it must have been everyone in a joking mood. But for some reason
on those old flip down a switch voting machines on the Democratic Line under Coroner, they
put a sticker that actually said 'None Filed'.

Well for some reason people started flipping it for the hell of it, and
None Filed WON! in the count. Hilarious.
