The problem with our democracy is within the media and the "free press"?
It is not that the citizens do not get the information they need. In many instances, they get too much information. It only muddles the situation.
But with a large proportion of our citizens, they get too little information. Or they do not get the information they need.
The present crisis in our democracy is within the media. Most specifically, it is with FOX News and its progeny. Some may logically argue that it all began with right-wing radio.
It is not that FOX News does not have the information to give the people of this country, so they can make the best decisions for themselves, their families, their communities, and their country. They choose not to report it.
What began as a simple exercise in giving people an opposing viewpoint has grown into a monster that can no longer be controlled. No matter what the "liberal media" reported, FOX chose to give the opposing viewpoint. For example, if the "liberal media" reported that scientists and doctors from around the world were saying that our country and the world were under threat of a deadly pandemic, then they felt they had to report that it was a conspiracy. It was exaggerated by the left for political reasons, they told their viewers.
The present problem with our democracy can be traced to the feet of Rupert Murdoch and FOX News.
Although the "liberal media" may sometimes be wrong, they are not always wrong. To report otherwise is a recipe for disaster, as we are now witnessing.
This is why we have so many people still believing in the Big Lie, because they hear it on the only media that they watch. There is a reason so many people distrust the Covid vaccine. There is a reason so many people believe the election was "rigged". All those lies were propagated by FOX News.
Although we can look far and wide for the causes of our present constitutional crisis, we need look no farther than FOX and their philosophy about "fair and balanced" media.
