In a very blunt column for the Atlantic, a former speechwriter for Ronald Reagan and both Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, laid waste to Donald Trump Jr. over his recent comments about biblical principles and called him out for being a callow opportunist taking advantage of the Trump name.
Last week, the former president's namesake told young conservatives at a Turning Point USA get-together, "We've turned the other cheek and I understand sort of the biblical reference, I understand the mentality but it's gotten us nothing. OK? It's gotten us nothing while we've ceded ground in every major institution."
That, in turn, set off Peter Wehner who has used his Christian faith to advocate for conservative policies while also turning on Donald Trump for being antithetical to his beliefs.
Using the younger Trump's comments as a jumping-off point, Wehner didn't hold back, beginning his Atlantic column by writing, "Donald Trump Jr. is both intensely unappealing and uninteresting. He combines in his person corruption, ineptitude, and banality. He is perpetually aggrieved; obsessed with trolling the left; a crude, one-dimensional figure who has done a remarkably good job of keeping from public view any redeeming qualities he might have."

(1,446 posts)...to feel shame for the abject failings in his character and personal direction in life which the writer of the article so unerringly pointed out(hint: he does not), therefore, dt,jr. feels nothing but contempt for someone denigrating his flawless overall persona, with his hyper-intellectual degree of business acumen and social insight, and will blissfully proceed to point out that the article's writer is just jealous of tfg's son and his obvious leadership lineage, and is probably just a frustrated 'liberal-in-training' who is trying to usher in the communist takeover of America by attempting to destroy the true 'patriots' who are trying to MAGA!
...something like that, I think.

(38,001 posts)He knows his father is a soulless, greedy, cruel man. He knows the only way he can ever achieve peace and dignity would be to extricate himself from his dad and that awful family. He also knows he's too much of a coward to ever do it. That's why he debases himself and is quite probably drinking and drugging himself to death. He's going to end up like his uncle Fred and not a one of them will mourn him when he's gone.

(1,299 posts)Stretching back at least to the shrub and probably to the reagan-atwater cartel, is that our species has devolved a subset who aren't subject to marks. There are scores of them who should have done serious time but instead retired to live lives of blissful Fat-cattery without a meaningful blemish.
So, while I love the expression and also greatly savored that line in the article, I'm regretfully having to seriously tamp down my belief in its lasting value.

(2,818 posts)not so much on what don jr said. And, even in the comments, it was practically all on don jr., his coke and grifting ways. NOT about what he said, what he was trying to say, not about how he was trying to manipulate the audience.
Couple this talk with the seminars being held around the country by the Dominionists *right now* (here, at Xmas time!) about how "we" can no longer hold back peacefully, but must take hold the mountains of power. These have been publicized on the 'Net, in papers, on TV, and in other ways. The Dominionists are making their moves now. They're starting to consolidate their power. I think they're concerned they may NOT take back the presidency in 2024. I'm actually afraid *we* won't, but it makes me smile to think they're unsure. But that means we're in for a VERY rough couple of years.
Dominionists believe lies, deceit, murder, any sin they have to commit will be forgiven if it's done in the name of the Lord for the glory of bringing His world to this world. And it's not just a theocratic America they aim for. It's Armageddon they truly desire. They truly wish to bring about the conditions to bring on the Apocalypse. Trump and his people can do this without even being in power. They keep sticking their nose where it doesn't belong and we don't slap it out of there. They have people in the middle east, in Russia, in China, in Ukraine, ostensibly on "business trips", etc. They can make all kinds of trouble.
Being Pagan with a Charismatic Evangelical background makes me supersensitive to these people and what they can do and what are likely doing when I see them in the news. I know what they've had planned for decades. They're not Millerites.
But being who I am, even with my background, makes me a poor person to raise the alarm among Christians of good faith. And it's these people who have GOT to start pushing back. You must proclaim AND reclaim your faith before you LOSE your faith altogether. There will only be one way to worship after this is over, and it will be in the manner and form of the Dominionist. Christ, the Redeemer, is lost to us, except silently in our hearts. His gentle, loving, peaceful style of living and teaching is lost to all of us, Christian and Pagan, alike. Please, those who follow HIS ways, speak out for HIM now, and against what Don Jr is saying, especially in this time when we celebrate a hopefulness of Peace on Earth, Goodwill towards Men.
