(3,096 posts)Her name was ruined by the media, and it doesn't matter how well she could do. It's a damned shame for sure, but we don't need anymore setbacks. As much as I hate it, Hillary's time has passed.
I think Biden will likely run again (and win). It's a winning formula and we should stick with it.

Regardless of my opinions of her capabilities, her morals, her policy positions, or whether or not I prefer her to some other possible candidate... That need not be considered. The only question is: would she win?
I strongly suspect she would lose to TFG or a generic Repuke in 2024 if she were the Democratic nominee.

(5,484 posts)Laugh all you want, but people want a celebrity. Springsteen and Hanks are getting a bit old (as is Clinton, who would be 85 if she had two terms). Grohl is a bit younger, Katy Perry is still a little too young.

(5,752 posts)says a chiefs job is for life. A new chief can be appointed. As to age, it would be worth it just for the number of GOP heads that would explode.

(46,142 posts)The office of "Chief Justice" is distinct from the office of an Associate Justice, which is why a sitting Associate Justice cannot just be elevated to the position of Chief Justice -- the sitting Associate Justice would have to go through a separate confirmation process (as was the case with Rehnquist).
The Constitution makes clear that Article III judges hold their "offices" for life -- and the Chief Justice is a separate "Office" with distinct duties under the Constitution (such as presiding over presidential impeachments).

(34,914 posts)But, she just turned 74. Any Democrat who gives anyone that age--I don't care who they are, a lifetime appointment on the USSC is a fool. Until there are court reforms, Dems need to take a page from the Rethugs, and appoint them as young as possible.

(4,158 posts)If there is an opening, she could run for the Senate and possibly become Senate Leader. She could be nominated forr the Supreme Court, but with her age, I don't think it would happen. I think Obama would make a great Chief Justice although he would have to talk his wife into it.

(3,433 posts)We have lots of talent.
We have a "deep bench".
We have a well positioned VP.
But... Your sense of the challenge and the risks are spot on. We have no other obvious unifier-type like Obama and Biden.
Hillary isn't it either, unfortunately, IMO.
Though, I bet Biden runs again, barring some health development.

(29,078 posts)Why will "the left end of the spectrum" fracture? "Likeable"?
Trump wasn't/isn't physically up to it either, the Republican primary in 2016 was large, he ran a horrible campaign and was the most "flawed candidate" in history, people said they didn't like him but voted for him anyway. He was the perfect candidate, an anti-establishment populist (who did everything the establishment wanted when it came to tax cuts) who was openly racist. That's why they voted for him.

Lamb is likely too conservative to win the PA Senate Dem primary, and has almost zero chance for the Dem POTUS nomination. He voted with Trump almost 70% of the time in the 115th Congress. only barely trailing Henry Cuellar. the worst Dem in the House. Cuellar, is an actual centre right conservative, a NRA and Koch-backed, Biden-bashing (knee-capped Biden hard on immigration, which, along with the Afghan withdrawal, started Biden's downward polls move), Rethug campaigning and fundraising for (John Carter, racist climate change denialist MAGAt), anti LGBTQ, massively pro big oil and for-profit private prisons, forced birther DINO. Cuellar doesn't even have Manchin's excuse (as in WV is batshit crazy Red), as Cuellar is in a solid Blue seat, that has never, in its history, elected a Rethug. Lamb's district at the time, PA-18, since 1994 only elected one Rethug, Tim Murphy, who resigned in 2017 under a huge scandal. PA-18 is now scheduled to be done away with in 2022, due to re-districting and re-apportionment. Lamb's new district, as of 2018, PA-17, has only elected one Rethug since 1976, long timer George Gekas, who served for 20 years until he was beaten in 2002. Since then it has always elected a Dem (Tim Holden, Matt Cartwright (who moved to PA-8, and now Lamb).

(27,835 posts)As for Trump running again being "certain" - it's not even likely.
He's losing whatever grip he still holds on the GOP - along with his grip on reality. His supporters are turning on him because of his recent pro-vax remarks, and they're turning on each other.
Many of the politicians he's endorsed have lost, and his political allies (aka co-conspirators) are either cooperating with the Jan/6 committee or taking the 5th - not a good look.
He's facing countless lawsuits - and all his recent courtroom losses means he has "loser stench" all over him.
When the Jan/6 hearings go public in the new year, facts will be exposed that even his staunchest supporters will be unable to deny, or make excuses for.
As for the PTB in the GOP, even those who would love to see TFG back in the White House will understand that it's just too far a stretch to try and rehabilitate the public image of a man who's been so thoroughly shown to be corrupt.
As for Trump himself, he won't risk losing - again. He will go to his grave insisting that he really did win in 2020. If he runs again and loses - which he would - it will serve as evidence that 2020 probably wasn't a "win" either, and that's something he can't live with.
That's why he's still on the "2020 election was stolen from me" bullshit - because he's got nothing else. And even the dumbest Republican understands that that's not a winning platform.

(24,957 posts)Please. It's bad enough that the media is basically writing off Biden's Presidency with 3 years to go. We don't need to join in with such negative speculation.
And as far as Hillary is concerned, I love her, but she's run and lost twice and getting up there in years. Let's focus on some other potential candidates in the event that this actually happens (like say Kamala?)
