You cannot court the worst and craziest elements of society and then pull away. Trump lies constantly and says vile shit, but this situation puts him at odds with two important values (lead the mob v get credit for something). He is trying to thread the needle by sticking with the "Get the vaccine, but I wouldn't force you". The crazies are not buying it because he had already crossed that line in the crazy before.

So, people will generally "like what he did for the country" but will see him as being co-opted into "the system" and leave him behind to follow someone willing to go full on crazy. Others will continue to support Trump and do the pretzel logic needed to make the contradictions make sense.

Ultimately, I think COVID or the next Pandemic will thin the herd more than anything anyone says or does. We have a segment of society that is so crazed and out of touch with the shared reality, that only diminishing their numbers will bring some sort of equilibrium back.

I did a cross country team run with a guy who thought Jones did nothing but preach the absolute truth.

He swore up and down there was a secret tunnel the US Navy had built from the California coast, UNDER THE SIERRA MOUNTAINS all the way into Nevada so that Submarines could get in there and be loaded with missiles. I'm fucking serious. His logic was: Why else would the US Navy have a base in Nevada?

He was convinced that Sandy Hook was completely staged because Jones said so.

He was convinced that FEMA had contracted to have thousands of coffins built for a coming ...oh...I don't know....culling of the herd, I suppose...whatever it was. He actually thought these were coffins;


Hint: They aren't. Those are grave liners. And the Walmart thing? He swore up and down to me that the "Jade Helm" training exercise was a cover for this.

He was convinced that the biblical "Nephilim" were actually real, true giants that lived and there was photographic evidence (Complete Hoax) .

This guy was pretty much onboard with every single line of bullshit Jones would spout.

I spent 5 days with this nitwit in a space smaller than your hall bathroom!

Fortunately he left the firm. Probably digging in his backyard for special tablets or evidence of Hoffa or something.

I played every NYE (but one) from 1978 to 2008. The one we didn't gig, the band was only 6 weeks old. So, we threw a party to intro the band at our house.
The last 10 years, we played the same club, which is 10 blocks from our house.
The NYE party started at our house at 2:15am. The band & spouses & 20-25 fans.
Everybody was usually gone by 10am.
We're "New Year's Eved out". We did our part for the revelry.
