I can't believe it. She suffers from depression and other health issues and has gone out of her apartment approximately three times since March 2020. I'm the only person who goes into her apartment (I live a floor below her) so I must have given it to her. I work from home and go out not even once a day (with a mask) and am vaccinated and boosted. What the hell??

(20,354 posts)It's possible for Covid to spread in apartments without direct exposure if they use shared ventilation systems. It has been documented before.

(36,913 posts)just wondering if the test could be a false positive
i don't know how common that is... but... ???
will you be testing yourself? we can still be contagious even if we are vaxed. hope your sister got a vaccine.
hope you are both okay.

(6,905 posts)I went to get tested, but they pop up near me was closed. Both of us are vaccinated and boosted.

(100,133 posts)Check overall symptoms, of course, but Omicron is so incredibly transmissible it seems it will be a miracle if we dont all have a brush with it before 2022 is over.
All the best for your sisters recovery. I know you are taking care of her, but please take care of yourself too.

(34,286 posts)But we only have ourselves to blame. It was "Christmas with his family...40 people in room" mess.
Now his mother has it and is in the hospital.
We're all vaccinated and boosted.
But my mother in law has been dying for about a month and was told she needed a new aorta..She's 89 and can't withstand open heart surgery.
So, she had to have a big Christmas celebration because she's dying.
Now we're all gonna die..whoopie....
Well, hubby is gonna miss a week of work...
I do hope it gets my kids serious about their boosters and the grandkid's vaccinations. My son said, "I don't want to get shots every few months, it's a big pain"...
If my MIL dies of Covid, then they will always remember it as what killed grandma.

Hope everyone bounces back ok.

(22,582 posts)But it's a lot less inconvenient (and less of a pain) than dying of covid, so I'll take all the shots they want to give me, thankyouverymuch.
I wonder if he has a needle phobia? That's the only way his stance even almost makes sense to me.

(34,286 posts)My nephew had it fairly early in 2020, so they figure it will be like the flu.

(34,195 posts)He received his two vaccinations plus the booster.
He's very good at wearing a mask everywhere he goes.
Yeah he got it.
He said he has severe cold or flu-like symptoms and can't taste anything.
He was told his loss of taste may last 10 weeks.
He has to quarantine for 10 days and he's taking cold flu over the counter medicine.
No fever.

(1,910 posts)There literally is no way to avoid the Omicron variant and future variants which will trend to being less severe but way more transmissible.
We all got vaxxed, we get boosted, we wear a mask for the sole reason of slowing this wave to lessen the pressure on hospitals. But there will be no way to avoid Covid going forward unless you choose to live exactly like a person with no immune system has to live....literally in a bubble with filtered air.

(76,698 posts)...is more about false negatives, than false positives.
That said, I've seen contrary opinions about the tests, with some experts being so negative as to wholly discourage the use of at-home tests, and others saying the accuracy issues are overblown.
Which ever way one chooses to lean, it's more about getting a false sense of security than a negative that's not real.
Like any chemical test, the possibility of a false result exists. But, one direction is more impactful on overall public health.

(9,212 posts)Hugs to you all. Maybe it is a false positive, the at home otc tests are not that great. She should get treatment asap including a pcr test to confirm. I am not sure how it could happen but if someone other than you came to the door even, it could happen with omicron- it is so much more contagious. Maybe you had an asymptomatic case and didn't realize it. With my father we knew with no doubt he was negligently infected at the er.

(16,402 posts)It may not have been you that gave it to her. It could've been passed through your apartment buildings ventilation system or some other factor you're not aware of. I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. A person can do everything right and still catch it.
